ROUND ONE EXPECTED TO BE CUT TO 10 MINUTES

Lost in the news from Monday regarding NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell's musings about a Super Bowl being played on foreign soil is the revelation that the time limit for the first round of the 2008 draft will likely be reduced from 15 minutes to 10 minutes, as soon as next week.

The other half of this looming development is that round one will be moved into prime time on Friday night, where the ad revenues (and rights fees) would be much higher.

We've previously suggested that only the first half of round one be moved to Friday night, since movement of the entire first round will create some of the timing issues that plague Monday night football.

How late to start is too late to finish on the right side of the Mississippi? How early to start is too early in California?

Even with only 10 minutes, the first round could take up to five hours and twenty minutes.

So start at 9:00 p.m. EDT on Friday with the first half of round one, which would take, at most, three hours and a little change. And then pick it up with pick 17 the next day at noon in New York.

Who cares. If they hold the first round on Friday, most people don't work on Saturday and will be more then willing to sit through the many hours necessary to watch the first round.

I like the idea of shortening the rounds, but Friday night isn't a good time slot. Most people aren't at home. If they really wanted a good weeknight slot, they'd move it to Thurday. That's when all the best tv shows are on.

Even shortening it to 10 minutes- with all the garbage that starts out and trades and other things you know you are still looking at 31 X 10 (remember, the pats will lose their first rd pick so there will be only 31). So its 5 hrs and 10 minutes. Add the opening garbage and other things and it could easily hit 6 hrs= at least 5 1/2. They will have to start it no later then 7 EDT.

I like it. Perhaps we could give 15 minutes to first eight picks since their trades are more complicated then 10 minutes each after that.

I hope to be at this year's Draft again.

I wouldn't mind this at all. Anything to speed it up and give it more coverage is cool by me.

it doesnt take that long i say 5 minutes a pick . they know who they want by the time the draft rolls around

no, its been consistently over 5 but under 6 hours for the last several first rounds, so cutting the time by 33% cannot result in the overall time being about the same

Not every team takes the full amount of time. I just never understood the team with the first pick using up the time. They already know who they are taking unless they are trying to trade the pick.

They are trying to make it quite an event to draw in more revenue...

It's always been an event to me and I think it would be pretty cool...

Great idea. :bang2: :bang2:

Let's celebrate Easter on a tuesday or open presents December 23rd.

Why tamper with one of the greatest days to be a sports fan? What's next, instituting a rigged lottery so the Patriots can get Patrick Ewing?

You are right. Who cares? I suspect fewer people will watch the draft than do today with it starting on a Saturday.

cant say I'd be happy if they changed it, but I'll still watch it like always...but I like the current format just fine...

But now it's three days of advertising instead of 2. :)

This is a great move, I think for everyone. I'd much rather hang out for an evening at a bar than spend an entire April Saturday indoors. After the first round, I can come and go.

Exactly...fifteen minutes is a joke....ten is still far too much!
