WILLIAMS SUSPENSION COMING?

In the wake of Monday night's epic game between the Bills and the Cowboys, plenty of folks are asking when and if Dallas safety Roy Williams will be suspended for violating the rule that his tackling style spawned.

Roy seriously needs to stop grabbing people like that, it can and has caused serious injury.

The only real problem I have with it is, that on the last 2 times I have seen him do it ...... it was unnecessary because the guy was going out of bounds.

I will admit that Roy has got to be smarter about this. It almost seems to me, that he is doing it now, out of spite.

Spite? How so?

I remember when the rule first came out. He said he'd rather take the penalty to get the player down rather than face the wrath of the Parcells. I'm sure even tho Wade is a sweetheart, I imagine he still rather face the wrath of the Phillips Frown than letting a guy get past him.

The play where he received the penalty, I thought it was unnecessary. This one, he was just fortunate it wasn't called. Still I don't know how a suspension could come down as the result of a non-call. but with the league, you just never know.

Now remember I am Roy's biggest supporter on this board. And I think its a horrible rule ...... and does not hurt near as many people as Sacking the QB .....

But it seems to me, with Roy doing it in unnecessary situations, that he is saying "I dont care what the rule states ..... I am gonna tackle the way I want too"

Especially since every time he does it nowadays he gets up with a little smile on his face.

I wish they would get rid of the rule ..... its ridiculous.

He wasn't flagged Monday because it wasn't a horsecollar. If you have one hand in front of the ballcarrier, it's not a horsecollar, according to Mike Pereira.

I was just fixing to say the same thing. It was close but NO CIGAR

That's entirely accurate, IMO, and he's not the only guy to think that way. When the rule was first instituted, I remember reading all the grumblings around the league by anonymous players saying they didn't care. If that was the only way to bring the guy down, then that's what they were going to do. Tackle the player and worry about the consequences later.

As with many rules, it's very subjective to the ref's POV, but this one just seems extremely hard to call to me. No matter how many clarifications they add to the rule, it seems that there will never be clear cut way to say that this particular tackle is a horse collar.

yeah, i agree...i don't think we should get all technical just to defend Roy...We all know what a horse collar looks like and he keeps doing it

Actually, the Horsecollar rule doesn't apply if you have a hand on/or grasping the front of the tacklee. Since Roy got flagged for a facemask on that play.....

PFT is ran by Mike Florio, he's from the Pittsburgh area and he's one of the biggest jokes in the industry. His sources include a handful of agents (not exactly unbiased sources) and mostly he just hijacks stuff he reads on the internet and usually claims that it was a "source" of his that told him that and tries to claim it as a fact. He's a fraud if there ever was one.

I just don't see the problem here. Dawkins use to suplex people after he tackled them, Chuck Cecil use to spear people, Joe Green use to closeline people...those were all with the intent to hurt people. Roy is just trying to get the guy to the ground. He's not trying to take people out.

If the guy is strong enough to be able to grab onto the shoulder pads and bring them down...so be it. This is football right?

Just to update if it hasn't been posted yet:

The Cowboys secondary was also hit hard Friday, two days before their big game against the Patriots in Dallas.

The NFL fined Cowboys safety Roy Williams $15,000 for another horse collar tackle during Monday night's 25-24 win in Buffalo. Also, Cowboys cornerback Terence Newman was fined $5,000 for impermissible use of his helmet.

News flash: any form of tackling can cause serious injury. And name me more than the one Row Owens play where it has caused a serious injury...good luck.

The only reason the penalty is in the NFL is from one play...the Roy tackling Terrell play...that is the only reason...it was not in the NFL before that nor was the thought of even putting it in there. Its ridiculous to change the rules of the game based on ONE play. Typical NFL though.

Well actually Roy broke Musa Smith leg that way too!

It is unessesary and it is dangerous the way Roy comes down on the guys legs. I will never know why he does not just wrap up!!

Chop blocks are illegal, blocking below the waist is illegal because they can cause injury more often than other types of blocks.

What makes this rule any different than those?

It's naive to think that Roy WON'T be suspended for this at some point over the next few years.

He'll keep doing it because it's second nature to him. I'm sure he doesn't even think about it before he does it. And one of these days the league is going to drop the hammer.

It's unfortunate, but it's a reality. Book it! :p:
