Rudy Carpenter hints at possible Cowboys shenanigans

Posted by Mike Florio on December 3, 2009 10:51 AM ET
So with practice-squad quarterback Rudy Carpenter recently jumping from Dallas to the 53-man roster in Tampa, the Cowboys apparently made no attempt to keep Carpenter by adding him to the active roster.

After all, the Cowboys already have three quarterbacks on the active roster -- Tony Romo, Jon Kitna, and Stephen McGee.

But in an interview with ***FAKE-NEWS-SOURCE***.com, Carpenter suggests that either the 'Boys were willing to carry a fourth quarterback on the active roster -- or they were going to give him a Christmas card in an extra-thick envelope.

"When I got the phone call from the Bucs that they wanted to take me off the Dallas [practice] squad," Carpenter said, "Dallas even offered to pay me active [roster] money to stay with them. I really liked Dallas, but I really thought it would be good for me to get the NFL experience as a third quarterback. When you're on a practice squad and you get phone calls from other teams to make you active, you can decline it. But I wanted the experience in Tampa."

It's hard to tell whether Carpenter was saying that he would have been getting active roster money in Dallas while serving as a member of the practice squad. Still, few teams devote four roster spots to the quarterback position.

We're not saying the Cowboys tried to skirt the rules. That said, any effort to funnel extra money to a practice-squad player in order to get him to stay put would be a clear and blatant violation, and it makes us wonder whether NFL teams have tried the "Christmas card in an extra-thick envelope" approach (not to be confused with the "banana in the tailpipe" strategy) in order to keep buried on the practice squad a player for whom there simply isn't room on the active roster.

And now, many of you will join me in my utter disgust that Rudy Carpenter was ever a Cowboy in any way, shape, or form. He is and always has been, a loudmouthed punk.

Am I the only one who hopes that we ARE doing just this? You know, provided that the NFL doesn't find out?

It just means Jerry Jones is willing to spend the money to gain advantages. Bending the rules is fine by me.

Wait, I thought practice squad players could be paid whatever the team was willing to pay them.

And if it were Daniel Snyder doing the same, you would be fine with it? How about Robert Kraft?

If we ARE doing this to secure a 4th QB, that's a fairly risky manuever for such an unimportant position. Unless of course, every NFL team does it and it is just something that is not talked about.

I think they have wages set, around 5k a week or something.

I sense an Arizona State angle to that fire.
I have a bigger problem with Florio in that piece. His implication that the Cowboys were doing anything remotely wrong is plain idiocracy or Floriocracy, in this case.

Florio is an idiot.

one of the sorriest things every week is watching The great Bob Costas, maybe one of the greatest broadcasters ever having to promote Mike Florio's pft.

What a load of crap.

I don't much care for the Scum Devils. He is one of the Scum Deviliest. Never liked that we signed him. Glad he is gone. Around he we refer to him as catfish. All mouth, no brains.

Florio doesn't know what he's talking about. Teams can pay practice squad players as much as they want. The Patriots regularly pay more than the minimum.

Exactly. Even we have done this before, haven't we? Can't remember who it was in the past, but I remember us giving someone a raise to not go to another team's active roster.

Florio's just looking for something sinister to pin on us. He fails again.

If I'm not mistaken there was a bidding war for Marcus Dixon after the draft.

Why the name Collistone (sp) comes to mind. Didn't he get like a $20k signing bonus?

I don't remember... But I was thinking more of a situation like this where we bumped a guy's salary in hopes that he wouldn't go to another team. And I'm almost thinking he stayed here. For some reason I'm thinking it was when Parcells was here.

Pretty sure I'm not completely crazy and dreamed that up. :)
