Maybe he has his hands on his hips in the first picture, which would raise his shoulders up making his neck look thicker. Then in the second shot maybe his hands are hanging loosely at his side. I could do the same thing and would look different in each picture. I don't doubt he took steroids. I just wish we had the full picture of how he was posing in both shots to help strengthen the stance the he indeed was on the juice.

I'm glad you raised this point. We really don't know whether Merriman was in the same position in both pictures, had the same pose or whether he was the exact same distance from the camera in both pictures.

Having said that, it does seem that his level of play has decreased. I suspect steroids but I'll give him some time since many Chargers are complaining about the defensive scheme. But if he remains an average player, we'll know what's up. Players who tear up the league just don't suddenly decrease their production - I don't care what system they're in.

the camera is right in front of his face in both shots. but really man it is so obvious that he has lost a tremendous amount of muscle mass in his shoulders and neck; i dont care what camera angle its at. his neck slopes outward in one and is straight in the other and angle has nothing to do with that.

I don't think his head is any bigger.

I think the one i superimposed shows that. The only difference in head size appears to be due to how his head is tilted.

exactly where did you line up the two pictures to superimpse because it looks like the top of his head is bigger but his ears are a bit highr as well so i cant really tell.

You could make the argument that he is closer to the camera and has his hands on his hips in the first photo, while further away and hands at the side in the other. If you measure his head and nose, they are bigger in the top one, which means he was in fact closer.

The telling sign though, is his kneck muscles which are much bigger previously. Roids did in fact make a huge difference.

In the first he has positioned his head back and shoulders out as opposed to the first. Obviously he looks bigger in the first. There are other small details. I don't think the differences are that much. Also, he elevates his shoulders far more in the first as opposed to the second photo.

go to a mirror. tilt your head forward and then tilt it back and you wont see a difference in thickness by about an inch. thats literally hiow much girth hes lost in his neck.

Then you're either blind or just being argumentative.

Yeah, the first thing I think about when I'm having my picture taken is "elevating my shoulders". 'Cmon, those photos are clearly damning evidence of having lost size. There is far to much difference to put aside with a change of the angle of his head. He looks as if he's lost 30 pounds IMO.

MERRIMAN PICTURE CREATING A BUZZ
We had a feeling when we posted the before/after shots of Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman earlier today that we'd get some reaction.
Thus far, the reaction has been overwhelming.

Several readers initially insisted that Merriman is wearing his shoulder pads in the photo on the top, from May 2005. He isn't.

Said one of the readers in response to our representation that Merriman isn't wearing pads: "Holy crap!"

A league source offered up the identical reaction, and one prominent member of the media called the photo comparison "maybe the most jaw-dropping thing I've seen on your site."

And as MDS pointed out in a FanHouse posting on Monday, the "after" version of Merriman was blowed up by pint-sized Maurice Jones-Drew on Sunday in Jacksonville.

The "before" version of Merriman had an encounter with Chiefs running back Priest Holmes in 2005, and Holmes just returned to the field a couple of weeks ago.

Again, we're not saying that Merriman intentionally or knowingly took steroids or any other banned substance. But the photos are what they are.

UPDATE: We've since found the 2006 preseason headshot, and we've pasted the three of them together.
