'SKINS SHUFFLE LINEBACKERS

Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that the Washington Commanders have signed linebacker Randall Godfrey. To create room for Godfrey, the Commanders released linebacker Lemar Marshall.

Godfrey, an 11-year veteran, has spent the last three seasons with the Chargers. Before that, he played for the Titans, Seahawks, and Cowboys.

Marshall entered the league as an undrafted free agent in 2001, and has spent his entire career with the Commanders. He has been a starter for most of the past three seasons, and he was due to earn $1 million in 2007, the final year of his contract.

I guess they are both a wash, Godfrey is an 11 year vet. but Marshall has been in that system for a couple of years now.

I coulda sworn I heard Skins fans talking about how good Marshall was just a couple of years ago...

But I think this is a good move for the Skins. Godfrey doesn't have much left in the tank, but he's a physical, tough vet who knows how to play. He just might be worn down after a few games, depending on how much they have to use him.

This is a good move for the Skins as Marshall has never impressed me. He has made some plays but is very inconsistent and seems to lose focus too often.

Godfrey is on the wrong end of his career but is still good enough to give them consistently good play. He may not make a lot of big plays but he won't give up many either.

My only question is did Godfrey get a 7-digit signing bonus? Or was it 8?

Guess they thought it was time to move on. Marshall was hardly awesome, but he was a servicable vet. I don't see a whole lot of depth in their LB corps right now.

Is Godfrey really an upgrade?

I'm fuzzy on the timelines, but Godfrey may have played for Williams at Tennessee. I'm not sure why they would cut Marshall instead of some camp fodder at this stage of preseason.

this is probably another case where the Skins fans overvalued some of their own players. marshall was a solid smaller linebacker that is much better suited as a backup. Time will tell what type of shape and condition Godfrey is in, but he has had a much better career than Marshall. I don't believe SD tried to resign him but the Chargers are loaded with talent. If Godfrey has kept him in good shape and still has tread on the tires I have to think he can provide at least the level that Marshall could.

Marshall may have some of the intagibles of knowing the guys and knowing how Skin nation operates, but he was a player overrated by many on Commander boards imo.

My guess is that he'll end up being picked up by the Giants.

I'm actually suprised by this one, though, I think Marshall is one of those players that fans think more of than the coaches do, and I knew he struggled last year, but so did a lot of other players on that defense. I had the chance to see him play in training camp and he looked pretty good to me - but then again, I'm not an NFL scout.

This is one of the repercussions of drafting -- you often have to cut a veteran. The Skins drafted Mcintosh last year, along with drafting Blades and Sartz this year.

I have no idea why they would sign Godfry, other than the fact that he's played in the system before.

Of course all the Commander fans will now say he's no big loss and he wasn't that good to begin with and Godfrey's a huge upgrade.

Actually, most Skins fans are puzzled by this move.
I think the "general population" of most fans do this when a player leaves the team, it's a way of moving on.

Yah, I think they played together. Godfrey might also be insurance at other positions with the injury to M. Washington.

Thats what i think too. Marshall is too small to take over Washington's Spot. Always liked Marshall cuz he busted his *** for us. There are always surprise cuts before the season starts and this is one of them.
