PFT: 'Skins To Make A Play For Samuel?

Dan Snyder of the Washington Commanders can't help himself. Every offseason, he is compelled to make a big splash, in some way.
He didn't do it in free agency this year, for a change. So with a top-ten pick burning a hole in his draft board and Bears linebacker Lance Briggs (whom the 'Skins don't really need) not available via a flip-flip of first round picks, Snyder apparently will sniff around Pats cornerback Asante Samuel (whom the 'Skins don't really need).
Ryan O'Halloran of the Washington Times reports that the Commanders are expected to call the Patriots regarding Samuel, a free agent who has been slapped with the franchise tag.
The Commanders currently have cornerbacks Shawn Springs, Carlos Rogers, Fred Smoot, and David Macklin under contract. Even if they trade or cut Springs, they don't need Samuel.
But Snyder can't help himself. He collects big-name players like Florio Jr. hoards McFarlane NFL figures, without regard to the manner in which his collection will interact on the field or in the locker room.
In hindsight, then, the decision of Samuel to recently go public with his dissatisfaction might have been a stroke of genius. With the Bears telling the Commanders that a flip-flop of first-round picks won't happen, the 'Skins need to find someone else to take the sixth overall pick off of their hands. And Samuel's comments apparently have caught Snyder's ear.
So for the No. 28 pick and Samuel, the Pats possibly could have the No. 6 overall pick. Heck, maybe they can also get the 'Skins to throw in Springs.
The question, then, is whether the Pats even want the No. 6 pick. If they do, the next question is whether the Patriots would try to package the No. 6 selection with the No. 24 pick (which they got from the Seahawks for Deion Branch) in an effort to move up to get once-in-a-generation receiver Calvin Johnson.

Serious question:

When was the last time Washington WASNT mentioned in regards to a high profile player leaving his current team?

Rumors of the Patriots trying to move up to the top of the draft have been circulating for a couple of months now.

I don't see the need to add Samuel, and wouldnt be especially interested in the Commanders acquiring him.

That is pretty funny! Those poor suckers don't have enough draft experience to know how to use that draft pick, so the Midget don't want to hassel with it, and, he might not be even able to afford a 6th rounder anyways!

Question is, is this the media just making noise because the Commanders in the past have always done this or is this stuff real?

I think it would be insane to be doing this. You would figure Snyder would have learned his lesson about FA and draft choices by now.

Build your team with the draft and patch with FA. Signing one big time free agent for tons of money isn't bad, but signing many and trading draft picks are suicide.

I could see this happening. They need to make their splash, give away their draft picks and spend big money on a guy, they will cut in a year.:lmao2:

Where have you been the past 5 or 6 years? Of course the Midget has not learned his lesson! He does this year after year after year...that's why the RedStinks suck year after year after year...with really no future to even try and get better!

At least the Cowboys use the draft and have some up and coming young guys to build with...

I don't fault Snyder for checking into guys like Samuel and Briggs... there's nothing inherently wrong with looking into every possibility.

The big problem, of course, is that he has a habit of starting at due dilligence, and then making a foolish deal that ends up hurting his team.

The Jets under Parcells had three picks one year also

Redsk*ns too... the year they drafted LaVar and Samuels... they packaged two lower first round picks to move up higher so they only ended up with two, but started out with three.

Well it was not too long ago that they were trying to make a play to bring in Dre Bly at CB.

So I could see them being interested in A.S.

However in between that time they signed Smoot and Macklin.

Who knows...they must be allergic to using high draft picks.

My personal opinion is that Danny is so short he has trouble seeing names high up on a draft board so he just tells vinny and joe to trade those top first round picks away.

Actually they had FOUR.

S. Ellis
J. Abraham
C. Pennington
A. Becht

The only reason I remember that is because they took a player from WVU and Marshall...I live in WV.

can you imagine the pats with the 6th pick in the first round to go with the other two 1s they have.

plus they would get next years skins 1.

Good god. The pats are setting up to win 5 or 6 wins 10 years.

Seriously, we should consider making a play for this guy, too! Why aren't we? I could actually see Lil' Bill working with us just to spite Parcells.

Though really, swapping 1st's with them for Samuels (if they were up for it) wouldn't be that bad of a move. 22 is a crap spot to be in, Samuels would be an instant starter across from Newman, in the end we could still get the same calibur of player with their pick that we could have gotten at 22. Draft Merriweather with the Pats 1st pick we get and we'd suddenly have the most deep, scary secondary in the league, hands down.

There are times when I think being a sports journalist is a piece of cake. Guy is unhappy with his current team and has a recognizable name. Simply create a scenario where Dan Snyder is interested. True or not it doesn't matter any more. He has made enough questionable moves that the average fan can easily see where one more is plausible.
