PFT: The Jets will not exercise Mazi Smith 5th year option

Literally 1 minute after we chose Mazi in the first round I said he'll be a BUST. All you have to do is look at his film! That's all - look at his Michigan film. The "one second delay" at the snap cannot be overcome in the NFL. Posters here said "Michigan told him to do that so he could diagnose the play". No coach ever instructs a player to torpedo his career with a one second delay at the snap. I'm glad he's gone.

a number of the front office shills and those that claim they know football were all over this narrative.
He was trained not to move quickly was such a pathetic joke
and when asked about passing downs, they just shrugged it off and said DTs never are very good at rushing the passer and he needed coaching
and on and on

Of course they weren't going to pick up the option.

But a first round pick, making this year's 2.5mil is guaranteed, so they'll keep him around as a warm body and a possibility to develop.

I won't be surprised if he makes a little career for himself. He came here, they trimmed him down as a rookie, then bulked him back up the next year. Not given a great shot here.

total horsecrap
anyone that thinks he is going to amount to anything is delusional
he had plenty of chances to show something and never has

I am still curious about the collective FO process that led to Mazi's selection. There was really nothing outstanding in his tape or measurables that would necessarily lead one to say, "First round talent"

LOL!!!!!!!!!

I mean he ended up in the Quinnnen trade lol….not sure how much we needed him to get the deal done but it will go down in history he was in the deal lol.
He was basically an attractive throw in for NY, that clears a roster spot and some cap for us. In a tear down/rebuild mode that they were in, a cheap/free look at a former top 30 pick is good move no matter how trash they were before

mazi is tied with shante carver as the worst first round busts in the jerry jones era in my opinion.

At minimum a warm body to backfill the position they traded to us. He was able to stay healthy for 2 seasons, started all of 2024, and actually had some production. Every year he had a new DC, and they messed up his weight his first season. If he were on another team, we would have picked him up for a look.

and the excuses keep coming

Mazi wasn’t a bad pick. In hindsight yeah but him and Taco I had no issue. What makes me concerned is picks like Tristen Hill and Kelden Joseph. Even trading for Eric Scott. They make zero sense.
Listen I know they loved Dan Quinn but I think he was responsible for the Mazi and Kelvin types. I noticed he is having similar issues in Washington. Some coaches need to stay out of the draft room. Parker supposedly had a lots of say in this class. So we will see.

He’s awful.

Might be a good guy but a bust in every sense of the word.

Yup.

He was drafted out of round.

He was more 2nd round than 1st.

Also, he’s too slow. He’s a 0 tech NT.

Guyton is going to bust out also.

Keep in mind he was drafted with the 26th pick. No player taken that late in the 1st round has a 1st round grade. They are all players with 2nd round grades by then.

Frankly from all the film I have seen of him at michigan he should have gone in the 4th
