News: PFT: Tony Romo has given up golf to save his back

Because the golf swing takes a lot of torque on the back. Many pro golfers end up with back problems over the course of their career because of the strain the golf swing puts on the back

Correct. Mechanically (aside from sitting believe it or not) it is the worst thing in the world for your back. Not literally, but you get my meaning. It is also one of those "things" that people with back issues can do with no problems whatsoever, then make one swing and bam be down for 2 weeks (literally). From personal experience, I fear that more than anything with Tony's back. He could never play golf again, or football for that matter and bend over to tie his shoe and his back could go out. That's just the nature of this kind of injury.

As a side note, I also think the title is misleading. It doesn't sound like to me he is giving it up; rather he has had to prioritize in the midterm.

There it is, then golf is evil...when are the golfers going to sue for back problems 20 years after they retire....LOL

Wise move Tony. Almost as smart as the Cowboys giving up on Bernadeau and Livings as their starting guards to save Romo's back.

I read recently that those who run regularly actually have less knee problems than the population as a whole. That could be because they tend to carry a lot less weight than the avg. person.

Never seen that, but does that really make sense either, I'm not sure. Guess it's a valid argument to some people. Did this report come from a shoe company, promoting their running shoes? LOL

It's like the old thing with coffee / caffeine causing cancer...if you drink 1000 cups a day for 800 years, you may have a 1% chance of getting cancer....then 10 years later, they are saying coffee / caffiene is great, if drank in moderation. Now you hear neither argument.

It's hard to feel sorry for Romo, unless he can never play golf again period. Otherwise, he's still going to get to start playing a lot of golf about 20 years earlier than most of us.

wait, you don't feel sorry for Romo when he makes 20+ mil a year?? But what about the unfair criticism and poor pass blocking:(

20 mill a year? Not quite. His salary for 2014 compared to other QB is ranked 14th highest paid QB

The brim on my hat is backwards sometimes when I am working in the yard and my back is to the sun.

It's all form. There is a difference between running and absorbing the shock in your muscles, and running with the shock on your knees. It's like weightlifting and how one squats. If you squat with your weight on your toes, that shifts the anchor point to your knees and gradually wastes away cartilage. You need to squat flat-footed. The same with the back and other sports. Everything is functional.

This is how I choose to observe all Romo threads now.
