PFT:Tyron Smith is a physical freak, and other Combine weigh-in notes

Didn't the Jets draft some physical freak a few years ago in DE/LB Gholston? That didn't work out too well.

Not saying Tyron Smith is another Gholston.

Didn't the Cowboys draft a physical freak in 2005 to play OLB/DE. The guy was like 6"4' and 250lbs and ran a 4.56 forty. His arm length was like 34 inches or so and his short shuttle rivaled that of WR in his draft class. How did that guy, I think his name was Demarcus Ware, turn out!!!!!!

He was a bust, so lets move on. :muttley:

btw, just being a physical freak isn't enough. The player also has to have the mindset, the intelligence, and the work ethic. Ware has all of them. Gholston it appears did not. Look at Fat Albert. He has everything, but the mindset and work ethic.

me too SDogo, guess im alittle gun shy on Smith, with history of USC offensive OT's. I know some have played good, but some havent either. Just makes me alittle jumpy.

Yea I would like to hear less about his measurables and more from people who have watched USC play, whether they think he can handle speed rushers, if he takes plays off, if he can display and "nastiness" etc etc. Does he pick up a lot of false starts or other penalties?

I wish he had the demeanor of Erik Williams or Larry Allen. I would draft him #1 overall. I think he will be good, but I don't think he is nasty like that.

I'm having Anthony Davis flash backs

????

Anthony Smith showed up at the Combine in abysmal shape and had horrendous workouts. He measurables like arm length are mediocre at best. He had a abysmal final college season. He stayed in the 1st round as a prospect simply through the power of repetition, as people had called him a "top 10 pick" for well over a year, so it simply must be so..

Tyron Smith shows up at the Combine in amazing shape. His measurables like arm strength are the record setting. He has a very good final college season, shutting down players like Cam Jordan. People distrust whether he's a 1st round pick simply because "How come nobody has been talking about him until now?"

Honestly, I don't see a single point of comparison. They couldn't be more different players.

They also drafted a physical specimen offensive tackle named D'Brickshaw Ferguson with freakishly long arms and amazingly nimble feet. That did work out well.

Anthony Davis was a LT that was being talked about as a RT in the NFL who was notoriously lazy in the weight room.

Tyron Smith was a RT who is being talked about as a potential LT who is notoriously a freak in the weight room.

God forbid you draft a very athletic, weightroom junky Tackle from USC with a workmanlike demeanor, not a nasty one.

You might end up with a guy like Anthony Munoz and that would be terrible!

(translation to the above: you don't need a "nasty" demeanor to be a good tackle. See, e.g., Munoz, D'Brick, Willie Roaf, etc. Especially D'Brick who is probably the closest analog to Tyron Smith. Note: I'm not advocating for Smith, I'm just pointing out that demeanor is not a deal breaker).

I'm not sure you are trying to call me out or just being facetious.

I didn't say you had to be, but it is a damn good trait to have. The meaner the better. I'm sure you are aware of what "Allen-itis" is and what Reggie White thought of Erik Williams.
