UNCLE RICO GOES LOCO

Fights are fairly common in NFL training camps. Training-camp fights involving a team's starting quarterback aren't.

But on Wednesday in Titans camp, quarterback Vince Young mixed it up with safety Donnie Nickey after Nickey hog-collared receiver Courtney Roby during a drill in which the players were in helmets and shoulder pads only. (Okay, they had pants on, but no pads in them.)

Young went bonkos. The AP says that Uncle Rico threw a punch at Nickey that glanced off of Nickey's helmet, but the video from NewsChannel 5 in Nashville shows that Young caught Nickey's face mask with an open-handed slap/push thing. (And if you're going to watch the video, do it soon -- per NFL rules, it will be active for only 24 hours from when it was posted . . . and, yes, it comes in at under 45 seconds.)

Asked about the wisdom of his move, Young said, "That's bad. That's bad. That's real bad." (Apparently, Vince provided the right answer three times in the hopes of pumping up his real-life Wonderlic score.)

Yeah, Vince. It was real bad. Stoopid, too. Already wearing the Madden curse for the 2007 season, Young was brazenly tempting fate by throwing his money hand toward the face mask of a teammate's helmet. The Nashville Tennessean reports that Young could be fined for his actions.

The most amazing thing about the incident, however, is that it didn't end with Titans defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth killing someone.

At least the WR knows Young has their back. No doubt it was dumb just from a potential injury stand point but the secondary message to the team is Vince will fight for his guys.

Uncle Rico has a better throwing motion, not a fair comparison.

I bet this was a planned reaction by VY. There was a fight a couple of days ago involving Haynesworh, which ended in Albert beating his chest about the Defense standing up for each other. I bet this was Vince's way of trying the same stunt.

At least he hit what he was aiming for. That counts for something. :D

That'll earn him some respect among his teammates. Even on the defense.

This guys a winner, it might have been a stupid thing but its the kind of thing the team remembers, this guy has it all, he is suchan incredible runner, if you ever get to see him in person, its so like he has an extra gear. Just wait, the Texans are so stupid for passing on him, they are going nowhere..

I think Vince will develop into a very good QB. Thing that always impressed me with Young is how cool he stay in bad situations. His team could be down by a good margin and he stays focused and under control which has lead to many big come backs in his career.

I like his response. Aikman went after James Washington when he laid out Alvin Harper in a practice.
Actually, I like his response minus the punch. He still has to throw the ball.

I think you're giving Vince a little too much credit here. What makes you think he's capable of planning something like this?

Sadly...that was about the funniest part in that whole lame movie.

Back to the topic at hand.

Although it shows his team mates that he is going to stand up to him, it was still a pretty stupid move on his part. He should have just pushed the guy or something else but taking a swing with your throwing hand right at a guy with a helmet on is just stupid.

Seems like with the thin talent/depth the Titans already have at receiver, there'd be a few knowledgeable defensive players educating the brain dead ones on how you can achieve good contact at practice w/o decapitating your own teammates.

That boy has fire and I love it! That's why he's the soon to be next comeback king of this league if he isn't already after just one year under his belt.

And don't think for a second Romo (ala Favre) wouldn't muster the same defense for one of his guys if the stakes and the game was high enough. He would. In fact I'm kinda scared to a point that he will. I just remember so vividly Favre in the face of Sapp more times than I can remember. The very thing Romo grew up idolizing.

It's called the new age of quarterbacks for you old timers who are still in the memory of Hane's commercials. In this new age of "thug" WRs and "thug" DBs taking over the league, a QB has to show he has some "street-game" too and be willing to go to battle for his guys just as they always do for him.

Young built some cred with his team with this. They'll fight for him now. Even the defense more too. They now see that when they're stuck sitting on the bench and the game is on the line that they don't have just some punk rolling the dice, they have someone out there putting it all on the line.
