Cowboys sources have been impressed with the development of Miles Austin, who made a few impressive plays in minicamp and could push Patrick Crayton at some point. Austin steadily has improved as a wideout and has good enough size to be a factor in the red zone, as opponents key on Terrell Owens and Jason Witten.

Does this mean Joe Horn is not coming to Dallas?

If Austin, Hurd, or Stanback can really step up this year and be a major threat, imagine the boost to our overall offense. And that's not even taking into account Terry Glenn's return.

I'm trying very, very hard to keep myself grounded and not get my hopes up... but on paper, there is zero reason this team shouldn't be playing in February, and I don't mean the Pro Bowl.

Since when did Austin surpass hurd?
I think its all about Austin being a deep threat. Ideally thats what you want opposite TO and thats what Crayton and Hurd are questionable at. It's still nothing but speculation.

Doesn't Austin usually have a good camp before the season starts? Let's see what he can do during regular season games before putting him over Crayton. Sure Crayton dropped that one crucial pass, but Crayton had a fantastic game against the poor Rams. I seem to remember two drops that Austin had against Washington.

I remember getting excited about Randal Williams in TC then nothing.

As Cowboy fans we should hope that Austin can take the #2 WR job because his size/speed ratio and ability (assuming he has learned to hold onto the ball) better suits the #2 WR spots than Carayton's. Also, Carayton would be the perfect #3 WR on this team and would provide great mismatches for defenses.

K.C. Joyner has an intresting analysis of Crayton that supports this:

Joyner says "I have a new rating this year, where I look at how a receiver did against three different classes of corners. I classify any CB with a YPA below 7 yards as a red corner, a CB with a YPA between 7 and 9 as a yellow corner and any corner with a YPA above 9 as a green corners. Reds are matchups you tend to avoid, yellows you attack with caution and greens are great matchups for a quarterback. Last year, Patrick Crayton had a 5.4 YPA against red corners, which is not very good. But his YPA against yellow CBs and against green CBs was above nine. Now a YPA around ten will usually rate a receiver at the top of the league."

Now that's some pretty compeeling evidence that at the #3 WR spot Crayton could do his most dmaamge. So having Austin emerge as a true #2 WR WOULD IN FACT be a great thing for Dallas!

I hope Austin is pushing others for playing time, this is why guys work hard in the off-season to try and improve. Like others I think Austin needs to show it when the season starts but I'm not going to mock a guy who evidently is showing some improvements

Not to take away from that peformance, but there were like two weak tackles that were broken and a block by T.O. who caught up with him from like 20 yards back that led to most his yards that day. He still has problems consistently getting open.

I could be wrong, but I don't remember Austin having a good camp last year. I seem to remember a lot of drops.

I believe Sam Hurd had a good camp last year.

I have learned from many years of experience that it is too early to get excited about a player when they are opening eyes in a minicamp.

If Austin can reliably get open and catch the ball, he will get chances to see the ball. Neither Hurd or Crayton have his speed which is elite. I'd love to see him step up.

I agree. Austin has to prove himself but I would rather hear that he is improving than not showing improvement. In the end it is what you do when it counts and we shall see if Austin can contribute more than he has thus far

Well, you know, Miles is going into his 3rd camp and this is about the time young WRs start getting it, so to speak. I mean, nobody questions his physical abilities. It's all about can he put it all together? If he does, he has as good a set of tools as anybody in the league does.

So Austin can catch and keep his mouth shut ? bye bye Crayton.

I don't think Dallas is looking to ditch any of the WR we currently have
