Cowboys OLB Ware says Olshansky, others can fill in ably for Canty

DeMarcus Ware

PFW spoke with OLB DeMarcus Ware on Tuesday, and when the subject came to who will replace departed DRE Chris Canty — who lined up in front of Ware and occupied a lot of blockers during Ware’s 20-sack season, Ware sounded disappointed at the loss. “With Chris, we lost a lot,” Ware said. “We lost a guy who can hold it down in run situations, but also it takes almost two guys to block him because he is so big and one guy can’t block him.”

Ware, though, pointed out that he believes new DE Igor Olshansky and two holdovers, Jason Hatcher and Stephen Bowen, have a great chance of filling in ably for Canty. “We’re bringing in a guy with Igor that’s the same way [as Canty],” Ware said. “You’ve got to have two guys on him or he’s going to kill you. We’ve got depth, too. We’ve got Jason Hatcher, Stephen Bowen — those guys are about stepping up, and that’s what they do. They get pressure on the quarterback. Last year, when we ran a 4-3 [defense on passing downs], Bowen and Hatcher went in for pass-rush situations. I think they are great assets for us.”

Canty was ok but not special or irreplaceable. If he were we'd have probably kept him.

Igor was a good pickup for us at only half the cost of Canty.

I think there's a perception in the NY media that since the "Almighty Ones" signed Chris Canty, the Cowboys will just fall apart and "Ware will not surviive".

:lmao:

Igor Olshansky was a great signing, and he could be an upgrade over Canty, but the talk is the other way around. Canty was kind of up and down last year, but he was solid.

Igor seems to be a player with a fair amount of pride. In saying so, all of this talk about him being a drop off in talent is great. Something to really motivate this very "equal to Canty" player to put him over the edge. The Cowboys did the right thing here letting Canty go and signing Igor for half the scratch.

Canty was good. Olshansky is good. I don't think we lose all that much if anyting.

I really would like to see Hatch step up his game and push Spears for some playing time already. He was supposed to be more athletic and provide some pass rush, but so far I am a little disappointed in what he's done as of yet.

Bowen has had his moments and he's solid in the rotation.

I wonder if we are looking for a NT early in the draft.

I guess we will see in a few weeks.

Nah. We've got those proven studs Junior Siavii and Tim Anderson.

I just think we need one more true NT in the draft to spell Rat..I wouldn't look at DE's too much this year.

I think they are close. Canty was probably more capable as pa pass rusher, but Olshansky may be more physical vs the run. Plus when you factor in we got Olshansky for less than half what Canty got, it was a good deal for us.

Hatcher has been a pretty big disappointment the past two seasons. Looked like he might really be something after a quality rookie yr, but now he's a JAG IMO. Maybe the lughtbulb will come on for him this yr.

Bowen has had his moments and he's solid in the rotation.

He's JAG too IMO.

I wonder if we are looking for a NT early in the draft.

Early? No chance IMO. Better chance we take a DE early I think. Ratliff is a probowler. There's no real reason to spend an early pick on a guy who might get 10-12 snaps a game as a backup NT.

I think the Cowboys are very interested in Gilbert and Scott in the Draft, and both would probably be DEs in our system (though Scott could also take some reps at NT at some point).

I'd guess Gilbert is a 2nd rounder and Scott a 3rd rounder.

I think there is a real chance that Gilbert could, in fact, go before pick 51. And it wouldn't surprise me at all if he's the Cowboys pick in Round 2 either.

Honestly I think we came out ahead in the Canty/Igor situation. Player for player is likely a push. But comparing contracts, it's not even close.

I'd like to see a 3rd or 4th round NT. Finding someone to replace Tank shouldn't be that difficult IMO.

love the fact that Ware called Hatcher for lack of production. To me that is leadership. Lead by example and call out under achievers.

OK. Canty needed to be doubled, Ware needed to be doubled, Ratliff needed to be doubled.Let us not forget that Ellis and "Nobody can block him" Spencer are coming from the other side backed by the better season of the two Spears. Yet we were a little better than average on defense. I don't get it.

I was always disappointed in Chris Canty.

He had his moments, but never put everything together and became the force we believed he could be.

Canty gets talked about a lot for occupying blockers, but he was also a primary DT on the nickel and his stats never reflected it. Marcus Spears logged fewer snaps and wasn't in the game on obvious passing downs, but he was right behind Canty in tackles and ahead of him in TFLs.

Maybe Canty can flourish in the Giants 4-3 with rush ends getting all the attention. In fact, he better, because that is what they are paying him to do.

If Canty doesn't progress to the next level, he may likely get released in a couple of seasons.
