Nov. 13, 2007

Editor’s note: The “potential UFAs” category lists players expected to become unrestricted free agents after the 2007 season, when their current contracts expire. Unrestricted free agents have completed at least four years in the NFL and are free to sign with any team, provided they have not been designated their team’s “franchise” or “transition” player, which would limit their options. Players in the UFA category who have an asterisk (*) following their names are believed to have voidable clauses in their contracts that will allow them to opt out of their pacts early, making them free agents. The “potential RFAs” category lists players expected to become restricted free agents after the season. Restricted free agents have completed three NFL seasons, and their movement is somewhat limited, as their current team generally has a chance to match any offer from another team. This is an unofficial list obtained through various NFL sources. The NFLPA does not release the “official” list until after the regular season.
Dallas

Potential UFAs: OT Flozell Adams, WR Patrick Crayton, S Keith Davis, S Ken Hamlin, RB Julius Jones*, CB Nathan Jones, CB Jacques Reeves.

Potential RFAs: RB Marion Barber, OG Joe Berger, DE Chris Canty, LS L.P. Ladouceur, DT Jay Ratliff, RB Tyson Thompson.

Analysis: By getting QB Tony Romo’s six-year, $67.5 million contract extension — patterned after Rams QB Marc Bulger’s deal — done now, the team takes the higher salary-cap hit this year and can turn its attention to other players: Marion Barber, Patrick Crayton and Chris Canty. Barber is due for a raise, especially if Julius Jones is not re-signed. Placing the first-and-third-round tender on him would cost the team $2.56 million next year and buy more time to work out a longer-term deal in the 4-5-year range. Team officials won’t say it, but they view Barber as the future at the position. Crayton has been pretty good, though a bit inconsistent, replacing Terry Glenn as the No. 2 wideout. If the emerging Crayton and his agent demand a signing bonus in the range of Drew Bennett, the top No. 2 WR signing last year, he could price himself out of Dallas, even with very little in terms of proven depth behind him. Canty has been better than your average fourth-round pick and will command a raise. He might be third on their priority list, though. That is, unless the team is thinking of redoing the contract of OLB DeMarcus Ware. With the recent signings of Bills DE Aaron Schobel (seven years, $50.5 million), Saints DE Charles Grant (seven years, $63 million) and Colts DE Dwight Freeney (six years, $72 million, $30 million in bonuses) — all 4-3 pass rushers in the same mold as Ware, a linebacker in the 3-4 defense — it might be wise to get Ware a new deal in the offseason when the price is still manageable and the cap space (potentially as much as $20 million under in ’08) is fairly ample. The early guess is that the team will let OLT Flozell Adams walk. There has been talk that Leonard Davis eventually will make his way over to left tackle

There is no way we move Davis over to left tackle. He's better at guard. I also don't believe there is any way we let Flozell walk.

Moving Bigg to LT would be a huge mistake. Offer Flo a 5-year deal and cut him after two. He gets his money and the Cowboys get peace of mind for a few more years.

Man,

We have a bunch of people comming up for renewal this year. My priorities not includeing possible extensions (ie Ware):

1) Adams - if we can get him for a decent price (might not be able too) we need to keep this guy. He is playing fanominally right now. Sure he will false start occassionally, but more often than not, he will completely destroy the man accross from him. I don't want to move Davis to left tackle either.

2) Barber - I see tough negotiations on this one as he has his new agent, and is an obvious catalyst on this team. A touchdown scorring machine and an exciting player to watch. We can't let him leave, especially since Jones probably goes in my opinion.

3) Crayton - He has been clutch in quite a few games this year. He always knows his route, which gives Tony the confidence to throw to him when pressured. He also has great hands. I don't see Glenn as comming back next year, and none of our young receivers are at the same level Crayton is now.

4) Ratliff - Extend him in the off season. He has proven he can play the Position.

5) Canty - he is starting to come alive now, and show some dominance. He is an excellent run stuffer that is starting to be disruptive in the passing game as well.

6) Hamlin - Playing well for us this year as the QB of the defense. It has been a while since we have run someone out there that gives me some confidence the job will get done right.

7) Reeves - I think he will command to much money, but if not we should re-sign him. A very good 3rd CB that can play as a starter. Has really gotten some valuble experience this year. I just have a feeling some other team will pay him starter money, and we wont this year. Probably have to look to the draft this year for his replacement.

Thats a pretty big list of players who are helping the team out. I don't see the team being able to bring them all back. One or two will jump for a few extra dollars.

I would actually like to see them all return, except maybe Thompson......all the others are actually playing right now and contributing.

That Ratliff wasn't discussed in the article, aside from noting he is an RFA, suggests to me that the PFW folks don't know much about this team.

No way should we move bigg to tackle. He has been great at OG, leave him there.

No mention of Newman in there either who's contract will probably expire at the end of the '08 season. I'd like to see both he and Ware's contracts reworked before the start of next season.

I think Adams is 50/50 on staying in Dallas. I'd like to keep the guy but I could see some stoopid team out there offering him a ridiculous signing bonus and a 5 year deal, which given his age wouldn't be the wisest thing in the world.

Couldn't we just franchise Flozell and keep him for one more year?

I agree I think that is exactly what will happen. One more year to get McQuistan and Free ready.

Lots of magic to be worked by Jerry to hold things together. I would like Flo to stay for at least another year to give Free time to develop. I believe McQuistan will replace Kosier and I just hope we can hang on to Colombo, but I have a feeling he will leave for greener (pun intented) pastures.

I believe he is right about Ware. Redoing his contract now, will help offset some of the damage later.

Alot of these guys seem like they are the type of players that would give up alittle money to win. Of course you are dreaming to believe they all would do it.

Canty, Crayton, and Colombo are the most likely to me to leave for more money. Canty is a RFA, but if you only tender him, someone will probably go after him and poison pill his contract. (They should outlaw that garbage by requiring any guaranteed money in the contract to be paid by the offerer of the contract)

Yea I dont by that at all, Davis is having an All-Pro year at guard so why move him. I think Dallas was thinking of leting Flozell go before the season but because of his recent play I think he has earn a new contract. Why pay Romo $68 millon dollar contract then provide him with an inexperience LT.

if we tender barber and a team bites, what do we have to do to keep him?
give up a first and a third to the team that wants him?
or we just have to match the money and contract they offered or let him walk?

Because at some point we're going to have to. Every team does. Aging players, roster limits and the cap ceiling "mandates" it. We tried that "hangyon" thing with old players from 1996 till 2000 and we crashed and burned.

Regardless of what the Eagles are doing this year, they've done it right as far as moving older players along to make room for younger and less expensive players.

This board was aghast at the Cowboys cutting Aaron Glenn... well guess what? I think Jerry has learned his lesson about hanging onto guys past their prime and paying them huge dollars.

Look for some vets to either be cut or allowed to leave via FA.

Adams
Ferguson
T. Glenn

All three have questionable futures with the Cowboys in my opinion.

we just gave glenn a bonus so i don't see him going anywhere if healthy.
if someone wants mb3 all we have to do is match the money unless they put some kind of poison pill in it and i thought the league stopped some of that.i think flo and jones are gone. i think we will sign crayton, and make a deal with mb3. hamlin could be back if he does'nt want crazy money, reeves would be nice to sign but could get a nice starter salary offer on the market.

I think Flo situation is a bit different from Glenn's, although I hear what you are saying about not overpaying and holding on too too long for older guys.

BUT......Left Tackle is considered one of the 3 most important positions out there......

We finally get an offense that is league leading. We finally can again say our OLine is one of the best in the league. This team would be stupid to not franchise Flo for one more year if he wanted to leave.

We have a franchise QB that we just gave 67 Mil to, and we want to put basically a rookie out there, or make the double edged mistake of moving Leonard Davis out of his best position.

Flo is an oline. They can play past 35, and play even better in mid 30's than before. He is more removed from his ACL injury now. Glenn was closer to 40 and a CB.

I'd also be shocked if Flo, after all these years of losing in Dallas, wouldn't want to stay on the team and finish what he started by getting a SuperBowl here.

I am worried that the team isn't saying anything positive about Flo though. Maybe they are trying to keep quiet so he doesn't cost so much, because the guy has really removed some top rushers from the game this season.

I also keep saying this. How would you guys like to see Flo playing for Washington, NY Giants, or Phili? I bet you $100 two of those teams attempt to sign him right quick if we don't. I think Flo has a bit more tread on tires than Larry Allen had at end.

I agree that signing him for 5 years might be stretching it, but this is a Left Tackle we are talking about. And this has nothing to do with how much I actually do like McQuistan and Free. Why mess with this?

I think messing with the oline would be the biggest mistake. Other than maybe churning the roster for the last guard/centre position, we don't need to draft or get FA's at Oline for a couple of years if we resign Flo for 2. That continuity and mix of veteran and young potential is huge.

We won super bowls with the solid oline, this scares me.

Big Nate said it yesetrday on ESPN Dallas, "Who would you rather see go against Trent Cole and Osi Yourmanura?"

Free may be the LT of the future but give him time to season. Flo's strengths are size and power, not quickness of foot. He could be a solid tackle for at least two more years.
