Top five coaches

1. Sean Payton, New Orleans: His steady hand allows his team to overcome the challenges that its opponents, driven to be the first to ruin a perfect season, present.
2. Jim Caldwell, Indianapolis: See above.
3. Marvin Lewis, Cincinnati: He and his coaching staff put together a superb game plan on both sides of the ball for which the Ravens had no answers.
4. Wade Phillips, Dallas: Can we put to rest, once and for all, the silly talk that this guy doesn't know what he's doing and that the Cowboys must replace him as their coach?
5. Mike Tomlin, Pittsburgh: Call him the Master of Monday Night Football, on which he is 5-0 for his career. Call him Mr. Prime Time, too, because he's 12-1 in those games.

...i've been a detractor i must admit, but ruffling the Eagles at the Linc may cause me to rethink because i really would like to see Wade succeed...

LOL @ the thread title.

One small step for Wade, one giant leap for country-bumpkin coaches.

You guys are laughing at Wade but is anyone laughing at Caldwell? They're the same sort of make. Lovable guys who don't have to yell to get their point across. Yet, Phillips has far more NFL experience than he does. I understand why fans feel the way they do about Phillips but look at what Jeff Fisher is doing in Tennesse right now. Look at Eric Mangina. Just because you can yell doesn't mean your team will contend. However, it does mean potentially that your players may tune you out and once you lose your players you never get that back. Wade is damn good coach. Head coach? I don't know. But you don't luck into the record Wade Phillips has as a head coach.

Well, we all strive for competency, right?

Not me, competency is vastly overrated...

I have never been afflicted with delusions of adequacy...

i could coach the colts and get 12 wins...i would just do what everyone else does and have peyton run the show behind the scenes.

Well, I think it's charming. If Mayberry had an NFL team they would have won 12 Superbowls by now.

I got a mancrush on Wade's non emotion beside the most stupid points of games, aka when the other team misses a fieldgoal but when we get a turnover he just stands there like "yup"

in all honesty I was hard on Wade until around week 4, thats when I jumped on the bandwagon, last year and in 07 I thought he was the greatest coach in history, but then we ended the way we did last year.

Payton and Lewis have coached some underachieving, very talented teams to non playoff years and have not won championships. Sounds a little like Wade, huh?

They are referring to a one week performance....not overall. Maybe you were drunk when reading it? :blind: :beer1:

Granted, it's one game in a 16+ game season.

Im bumping this just for Wade.

LOL...exactly.

Ever notice that so much of what people have against Wade is superficial; his voice, his looks, his mannerism, his fist pumps. There are some seriously shallow folks out there--especially if they want to say that stuff reflects ones football knowledge. For me, the jury is still out on the guy...but at worst he is an average-to-above average head coach.

The telling thing is when you hear other coaches in and out of the game talk about Wade, the vast majority say he seriously knows his stuff. It's TV announcers, ex-players who never coached, and especially regular fans who really are clueless, that seem to make the superficial prejudices against the guy. The further you get from people that would really know what typ of coach he is the more silly it gets.

I'm not a huge fan of his, but I do think he has turned the corner here....especially when you consider that he is coaching with Jerry looking over your shoulder non-stop and an assistant head coach that was there before he was---both diluting his power.

I wanted the guy fired immediately after the Broncos loss.... I've since changed my tune

not sure that I want him back, but he deserves credit for where we are right now

what I'm scared of is letting Wade go then going through a Campo-like era where we find ourselves saying "I wish we still had Wade"...
