Stopped by McD's this afternoon to grab some lunch.

Got my cheeseburger, my fries and my small vanilla shake and sat down next to a window overlooking the McD's play area.

Out there 3 sets of parents. At one table sat a younger gal. Over at another table sat a woman more middle aged. And off in the corner at another table sat a man and woman– the man on one side of the table, the woman on the other.

While I ate my food I'd glance over at the kids playing, then I'd glance at the parents...

All parents were busy pushing buttons on their phones, with their eyes glazed to the screens.

There was no conversation from any of the parents to the kids. Nor were the man & woman at their own table conversing.

This went on for probably 10 minutes.

I'm not going to label the experience good or bad. It just is what it is in 2014.

I cant say anything as I am guilty but I think we need to do something about it on a personal level.

At least they were not driving! I was coming home the other day from Walgreen's on a two lane highway each way, 45 mph is the speed limit. I was behind a young girl in the right lane that was doing about 30 mph, so I moved over to the center lane to go around her and just about 50 yards or so a bus had stopped and as I passed the girl I saw her trying to text or watch something on her phone or whatever...then BAM! She looked up and just in the nick of time she slammed on her brakes, but not enough to plow into the back of the bus!

I did not stop as a witness because it would be senseless as the driver behind you must use reasonable look out for the cars in front of them. I don't know if she got hurt, but if she did....I don't feel sorry for her one way or the other.

I think this is some alien plan to quietly take over the planet. They have made sure texting and Ipods and so on are easily available and just sit back and watch us destroy ourselves in all ways.

then they calmly move in and take over what is left. Keep a few million as slaves and butcher the rest. Strip the planet of resources, kill the slaves, move on.

I must spend 3 hours on my phone a day. It just accumulates and its pretty sad to realize that.

Mickey D's play area is the cheapest play date around for parents and kids. A happy meal and a good 2-4 hours of uninterrupted chill time with the occasional eagle eye to see if all is well and a run to the bathroom.

I think social interactive skills are taking a major hit and will continue to weaken. I shudder to imagine how the next generation will "interact". Call me an old fogie at 36.

More and more idiots are using their cell phones in movie theaters also. No one has any common courtesy anymore. All they think about is themselves.

This drives me crazy. I was on the verge of bombarding one idiot in front and below me this past Saturday with my popcorn.

There isn't anything else to do when you are at McD's play area. I did this every time we went. It's a great time to get caught up on things.

Not sure which is worse: paying more attention to your phone than your children or letting your children eat McDonald's.

Too much of either is pretty bad. Just go to a public place and look around. Most Americans are overweight and not by a little.

I always made it clear we went to McD's to play not eat. If it weren't for their playgrounds we would never consider stopping at McD's for any reason.

Try this...

Stack the phones face down on top of each other...

The first person that reaches for their phone to check messages, email etc... pays for the meal...

I've done this with my kids a few times... they've never had to pay...

This is a personal peeve of mine I have with my wife. The movies are preceded by messages asking patrons to turn off cell phones or take the conversation outside during the movie. I turn mine completely off if I had not done so already.

My wife? She may put it on vibrate at best. Text messege arrives? She immediately looks to see what it is and brightens that section of the theater. Her excuse? There may be an emergency and she would not know of it unless she checked her cell. Of course, emergencies could happen at any time. My counterargument is if the threat of an emergency happening is so great, WHY GO TO THE MOVIE IN THE FIRST PLACE?

Cell phones are great conveniences but they are also evil. Often, I tell my kids I do not know how they would have survived before cell phones. I tell them how I used pay phones or borrowed someone's business or home phone, usually for urgent or emergency situations. They look at me like I am nuts. My wife, who is only three years younger than me, gives me the same look. The cell phone fad is so looney that I'm almost in agreement with burmafrd about a possible conspiracy to take over the world! lol.

You should have your wife get a screen filter app if she is going to do that. It virtually eliminates the glow from the screen when it's used. That way it won't be nearly as bothersome to the people around and behind her.
