I currently count four "bubble" spots available on the roster (that could be wrong or it could change this weekend, but it's what I think for now). I've got 2 QBs, 3 RBs, 1 FB, 3 TEs, 6 WRs, 8 OL, 5 DEs, 5 DTs, 6 LBs, 3 Ss, 4 CBs.

If these are our bubble players, who would you pick:

QB White

RB Jackson

WR Thompson

TE Gathers

OL Green

DE Tapper

S Kelly, Robinson, Showers

CB Thomas, Ward

Or if you think a different bubble player should be included, here's who I'm absolutely keeping right now.

QB — Prescott, Rush; RB — Elliott, Smith, Scarbrough; FB — Olawale; TE — Swaim, Barwin, Schultz; WR — Hurns, Beasley, Williams, Austin, Gallup, Lenoir; OL — Smith, Williams, Frederick, Martin, Collins, Fleming, Looney, Edwards; DE — Lawrence, Crawford, Charlton, Armstrong, Gregory; DT — Collins, Woods, Price, Jones, Ward; LB — Lee, Smith, Vander Esch, Thomas, Wilson, March-Lillard; S — Woods, Heath, Frazier; CB — Jones, Awuzie, Lewis, Brown; ST — Bailey, Jones, Ladouceur.

My "bubble" picks" would come down to Thompson, Gathers, Tapper, Showers and Ward right now. And at the moment, Ward would be my odd man out even though I'm not totally comfortable going with just 8 DBs while going long at TE, WR and DE. From a numbers standpoint, that's not ideal.

I'd take Gathers, Tapper, Ward and another OL (there will be some decent vet cuts I would guess). 9 OL might be overkill but Edwards is still fairly raw and with Frederick having these stinger issues and Smith's back, I might go heavy on OL, at least for now.

We should take a 4th S but I just don't like any of those guys. Now if we bring in a vet, that might change something.

Showers, Ward, Robinson and Gathers
See Thompson ability to play ST saving him. Green is a FO fav, he's not going anywhere IMO.

If draft position and investment weren't a consideration, Taco Charlton would be in serious trouble.

Lawrence, Crawford, Armstrong, and Gregory are better players. So is Tapper, but he's rarely available.

They will add a 4th safety before week 1. It may not be Thomas but someone will cut a safety they think is worth having so that’s 1 spot. I’m going Thompson, Gathers, and Duke Thomas to fill out the 4 although I do believe they will add at least 2 new players after final cuts. One will be the safety and the other could be any position and could knock out Someone surprising. Tapper, if healthy, should be traded if possible.

First of all, congrats on a great conversation topic.

My own "keepers" essentially match yours - save for March-Lillard - I don't have him as a lock. But if I had four bubble guys to keep I'd go with White, Thompson, Gathers, and Tapper. But I'd expect the team to keep another cornerback, strictly for depth purposes.

Crazy talk. He’s fine. Crawford is probably in his last year. Gregory is one joint away from a lifetime ban. I assume they will pay Tank but you never know. And Tapper? Didn’t even know he was still on the team

We simply can't go an entire season with just 3 safeties...unless Byron isn't really a full time CB. I read where we had 400+ plays with 3 Safeties on the field last season (& over 50 plays w/ 4 safeties). Heard the names, but really don't know a thing about Kelly & Robinson. Can't figure if they've got real potential or are just somebody's pet cat.

Next draft is supposed to be deep on the DLine. Are we comfortable enough there to give up our 2nd for ET?

The newer safeties weren't very good last week. The good news is that Awuzie and Jones can play safety in a pinch ... and might be better than the top three we have at the position. However, that would mean that Brown or Lewis would have to start at corner.

Most of the corners outside of the top two didn't really impress me either against San Fran. I was expecting good things from Ward based on some hype from camp, but didn't see them.

Showers was probably the eighth-best defensive back in that game, but I'd be wary about having to use him at a safety position during regular-season games.

At corner or safety, I think it's going to end up being a case of keeping a lesser player (compared to who we can keep at another position) or picking up someone's cut because of numbers. The seven who are locks to make the roster aren't enough.

As far as March-Lillard goes, I don't know if lock would be the right term, but I feel fairly comfortable that he would make the roster if the decision was made today. However, if some linebacker blows up on special teams, it wouldn't surprise me to see that spot shift. I want to see more of Covington, Lanning and Quiero in that regard.

Gathers
Jackson/Scarborough (my guess is Scarborough to the practice squad)
Tapper
Lenoir/Brown

I agree. They'll likely keep a guy just to have the depth.

It's just me, but I can't help but wonder if they'd just risk going with five linebackers to start, if they really needed the roster space.

I think you could get one and likely two of your backups to the practice squad if you needed to with little risk of the match getting poached.

And that sixth linebacker is very likely to be inactive every week anyway, so you'd have one stashed just one spot further down the roster line.

That's just me speculating about possible roster decisions anyway.

You could be right on Green. I have that eighth OL spot going to either him or Edwards, and I lean toward Edwards after last week. We could go nine OL and keep both, but I just don't see the value of keeping Green being as high as the value of keeping some of those other "bubble" players.

I don't think it's Crawford's "last year" necessarily, but it needs to be his "last year" under this contract.

I'd love to keep him and see him retire as a Cowboy, but that contract has to finally get fixed and his number has to come down. I would hope that both parties could agree on a compromise, but that price has to come down.

We could go with five LBs, especially with all five being capable of playing more than special teams.

IMO, the sixth linebacker will be active because of special teams.

Cutting Taco would be a really bad idea. Even if he doesn’t win a starting job, he will still be a very good backup.

TE- Gathers
CB - Ward
LB- Covington
S- Robinson

These choices werent made strictly by player ability but for depth purposes as well

Green has experience in FOUR of the five OL spots.......
At the start of the offseason, Stephen admitted the roster would see turnover but he singled out Chaz Green to return. LIke I said, Chaz isn't going anywhere (LOL). Hell if the FO felt as bad about him as many fans, he would have been cut already. They WOULD NOT be wasting time/snaps on him. They know exactly what brings to the table.

As poorly as Chaz played in the Atlanta game last year - and it was horrible - he also filled in for Tyron the year before and performed well. Ultimately the team has to decide which is closer to the real Green and which was a fluke. I'm okay with whatever they decide, especially with Flemming on the roster too.
