Pick four "bubble" players

Green has experience in FOUR of the five OL spots.......
At the start of the offseason, Stephen admitted the roster would see turnover but he singled out Chaz Green to return. LIke I said, Chaz isn't going anywhere (LOL). Hell if the FO felt as bad about him as many fans, he would have been cut already. They WOULD NOT be wasting time/snaps on him. They know exactly what brings to the table.

I agree that fans are more down on him than the front office (disregarding that he has played well in the past), but remember that when he got pulled from the Atlanta game, he did not touch the field again, even when Bell played poorly in his place.

I was hoping that a new OL coach would be able to get him back to where he was in 2016, and I think that's what the front office's hope was too, but we haven't seen it. Some of the same problems that made him so bad against Atlanta are still on display.

However, I do think limited options outside of the top seven could see him stick again. If we go nine with the offensive line, he's definitely one of the top nine, and I don't think I've seen enough difference between and Edwards to say for sure that Green isn't still No. 8.

TE- Gathers
CB - Ward
LB- Covington
S- Robinson

These choices werent made strictly by player ability but for depth purposes as well

Is Covington in addition to the six other linebackers? If so, that's extra depth at that position as is Gathers at TE (although the argument could be made that if we're going to use a lot of two-tight end then keeping four would make sense.

To me, that would be the argument against them. Depthwise, White as a 3rd QB, Ward/Thomas as a fifth CB, Robinson/Kelly as a 4th safety and Green as a ninth OL would be more typical ... even though they aren't my choices for the "bubble" spots.

I want Gather because I think there is ability there to mine that's greater than any of our other tight ends possess. (It's just potential, though, so we may never see it realized.)

I think Thompson was playing well before getting injury, and if he gets back soon, he could leapfrog Lenoir, but I don't think our talent at the top of the receiver corps is proven enough to get rid of either player yet.

I do think our talent at end is good enough to do without Tapper, but only because we seem to be deep at the position. I'd rather not toss him aside just because of numbers.

I do think we have to keep at least eight players in the secondary, which is why I went with Showers. He was used a lot on special teams against San Fran and also made some plays on defense. Ward could take this spot with a good showing, though ... of course, at this point, we could probably say that about several of the DBs.

This is exactly why he's still here. Just my take, but I think FO and coaches realize that Falcon game was more their fault than his. The reason we didn't see him in another game is his confidence totally spent after that game. Which explains what I said earlier about Stephen going out of his way to assure his return for 2018 training camp. Remember the biggest issue we had with Green a couple years ago? Wasn't his performance but health. Couldn't stay healthy.....in fact, most agreed back then WHEN he played, he played fairly well.

I like Queiro, Jackson and Kelly but your four I wouldn't have an issue with and it makes sense

I was intrigued by Quiero when we signed him, but haven't seen him do much yet. Kelly kind of falls into that same category.

When some were saying we should cut Green during the offense, my argument was that he had played well in 2016 so we needed to let a new OL coach see if the Atlanta game was an aberration. From everything I've seen in camp and the first preseason game, it doesn't appear like it was. He's committing the same kind of technique errors that caused him to struggle in that game. If that continues, there's no reason to keep him because we couldn't use him in games.

Thompson - They're going to need more WRs going in until things shake out. He's experienced and has size plus speed. Of course, that hinges on him getting on the field.
Tapper - I think this is simply good insurance for a Gregory slip-up.
Robinson - I'm not enthralled with any of your 3, but unless Showers suddenly breaks out in the next 2 weeks, Robinson is the choice almost by default
Thomas - IMO, they won't go with just 4 CBs, especially if they only have 3 safeties. I personally think they'll keep 6 and 3 since Jones and Awuzie can play safety, but in your thesis, I'm keeping Thomas. They really like him last year. Of course, that was last year and this is this year.

I just can't buy Rico. Reading the tea leaves of what Garrett says about him and the TEs in general, coupled with the fact that he only recently gave any indication that football was really a great desire, I don't see him taking a spot on the 53.

They have been around the ball all through camp. Both even have interceptions, granted I expect more from them in the preseason games so hopefully camp will finally translate this Saturday

What has Armstrong, Gregory, and Tapper done to show that they are better players than Taco?

Seriously?

Armstrong has been the star of camp. He's beaten Tyron mulitple times. Gregory is a far better pass rusher than Taco has ever been. Tapper just can't stay healthy, but he's a good pass rusher.

Taco is having a very quiet camp. Barely a mention.

Didn't see where they had interceptions. There were some in the scrimmage that I wasn't sure who made them, though.

We simply can't go an entire season with just 3 safeties...unless Byron isn't really a full time CB. I read where we had 400+ plays with 3 Safeties on the field last season (& over 50 plays w/ 4 safeties). Heard the names, but really don't know a thing about Kelly & Robinson. Can't figure if they've got real potential or are just somebody's pet cat.

Next draft is supposed to be deep on the DLine. Are we comfortable enough there to give up our 2nd for ET?

Many of those snaps on 2017 listed as having mote than 2 Safeties, were situations where Byron Jones was really playing CB. When he lined up on TEs, that was really a CB position but listed in snap counts as Safety because Jones was a Safety.

There is no reason to trade a 2nd for Earl Thomas. A player near 30 that is demanding a huge contract has limited trade value.

Serious as a heart attack .......pretty sure I can find the article of Stephen assuring his return but too lazy to look for it right now. You don't think FO and coaches don't ALREADY know Chaz Green strength and weaknesses? Notice they didn't hesitate to move on from Bell, who many thought/think is better than Green. As stated earlier, two years ago, we were more worry about his health than his play. His experience makes him a lock for 53 IMO........

Don't always agree with you but I'm signing off on this .......+1 (lol)

I currently count four "bubble" spots available on the roster (that could be wrong or it could change this weekend, but it's what I think for now). I've got 2 QBs, 3 RBs, 1 FB, 3 TEs, 6 WRs, 8 OL, 5 DEs, 5 DTs, 6 LBs, 3 Ss, 4 CBs.

If these are our bubble players, who would you pick:

QB White

RB Jackson

WR Thompson

TE Gathers

OL Green

DE Tapper

S Kelly, Robinson, Showers

CB Thomas, Ward

Or if you think a different bubble player should be included, here's who I'm absolutely keeping right now.

QB — Prescott, Rush; RB — Elliott, Smith, Scarbrough; FB — Olawale; TE — Swaim, Barwin, Schultz; WR — Hurns, Beasley, Williams, Austin, Gallup, Lenoir; OL — Smith, Williams, Frederick, Martin, Collins, Fleming, Looney, Edwards; DE — Lawrence, Crawford, Charlton, Armstrong, Gregory; DT — Collins, Woods, Price, Jones, Ward; LB — Lee, Smith, Vander Esch, Thomas, Wilson, March-Lillard; S — Woods, Heath, Frazier; CB — Jones, Awuzie, Lewis, Brown; ST — Bailey, Jones, Ladouceur.

My "bubble" picks" would come down to Thompson, Gathers, Tapper, Showers and Ward right now. And at the moment, Ward would be my odd man out even though I'm not totally comfortable going with just 8 DBs while going long at TE, WR and DE. From a numbers standpoint, that's not ideal.

7 bubble players

Rico

Ealy

Noah Brown

Scarborough/Jackson/ and the other guy not named Zeke or Smith (only one of the three will make it to the PS)

Chaz

All on the bubble. 4 or 5 of the seven will not make it

5 bubble players

Chaz

At this point I don't know if Ealy is even on the bubble. Barring injuries or Gregory screwing up he seems already headed to the door.

Yep, agreed. I think we keep Lenoir over Brown too. He has upped his game. Brown hasn't done anything. IMO Rico is dead man walking too
