Pickens appears to be a poor risk

The reality is that this pick alone won't move the needle because we have so many positions with questions such as DT, LB, RB and CB.

We've seen several off seasons where Jerry just refused to aquire starting talent via Free Agency and now it's piled up

Judge this pick merely on addressing ONE area of need.
Fair, but then that need pops up again after one season. If he had two years left or a fifth year option it would make more sense….or if the team was ready to win now, but this is probably about Jerry not wanting a second bad season in a row, not building a championship contender. Then his excuse on free agency is “having more of a longer term plan.”

All over the map with everything and it seems to change often. Contradiction and hypocrisy are organizational philosophies.

I suppose they could tag him but I don’t think good ole Georgie is gonna be all too amicable in that regard. Wants that bag. Wants them targets. Be aware Prescott !! Best to check out of that running play and feed the barking dog, who I’m sure will have a direct line to the celebrity owner.

You’re right, had Pickens’ contract afforded Dallas another couple years then it would be a good calculated gamble giving up that 3 rd. But having to extend him next season if Dallas wants to keep him is not good at all. The Steelers sure as heck did not want that head case around.

Dallas not only has to pay MP, but next season has some OL they will have to deal with . Surprise, Surprise, Surprise… Jerry got taken to the cleaners yet again. This team was not a player away from the SB.

Some seem to be forgetting that if we let him walk after this year, we very possibly get that 3rd rounder back

So, if he leaves, we get his services for one year by essentially trading a 2026 3rd for a 2027 3rd

Not only are we giving up a 3rd and a 5th next year but we basically are signing him for only one season. On a team that isn’t one player away.

His rookie deal runs out and why Steelers traded him as he seems unwilling to negotiate. On top of that he’s a head case. His emotions are difficult to keep in check.

He was fined for using an expletive on his eye black against the Cowboys. He also drew wide spread criticism in 2023 for what could generously be described as the attentive downfield blocking for his teammates.

Considering his volatility, the Steelers didn’t seem interested in signing Pickens to a contract extension running out of patience for the talented but mercurial former 2nd round pick. A 3rd and 5th looks like they found an anxious taker.
Ok

And he’s in a contract year and needs to have his best season ever - in ALL areas.

And I firmly believe that the team will have a group of people working with him to maximize his abilities while trying to minimize his emotional outbursts.

Dak and Lamb as current players, and former players like Michael Irvin as well.

I think they have a plan.
I don’t care about the antics. Lots of receivers in the NFL carry on in a manner their team probably wishes they would not. The “plan” needs to be handling player compensation, in deference to the salary cap, that keeps enough talent on the roster to field a team that can win playoff games.

If Pickens has a typical Pickens year, which is outstanding, he’s going to expect outstanding compensation. No different than Higgins and other top WR2’s. The Cowboys aren’t a charity. You can bet George Pickens isn’t either.

The 5th is in 2027

We didn't give up much when you consider his production and future outlook. For the first time in a very long time, I'm excited heading into Oxnard. This roster looks loaded, looks locked in, looks and sounds hungry. Many guys I've seen interviewed have chips on their shoulders. I can't wait.

What ever

thought the 5th was the following year

First of all, we didn't trade our 3rd next year and 5th in 2027 for for just Pickens. It was for Pickens and 6th round pick in 2027. So basically a pick swap in 2027. A wash at this point leaving it basically a 3rd next year for him. Great deal for only a third. This guy talent wise is a legit #2 and could easily handle #1 if need be.

I think his "off the field antics" & whatever is overblown. He is still young being just turning 24. He will be fine under this coaching staff

No doubt.

But the Cowboys will have the option to tag him as well. Probably at $23-$25 million.

being a contract year we certainly will get his best

but this is clearly not a long term situation because if he does perform as he can then we will not be able to afford both him and Lamb

this team is not at a point where one or two players will take us all the way

IF WE WERE THAT, then this trade would be a great one.

But we are not
The Eagles figured out a way to pay Brown and Smith. Surely our experienced front office can do the same…right?

If we don’t re-sign Pickens and he moves on in free agency we’ll get the 5th we gave up in a compensatory pick so he’s not that big a risk.

I believe it’s just under $20 million. He and his agent will ascertain his value comparable to other wide receivers of similar skills and performance. $25 million per season is outside the top ten for NFL wideouts. Tagging him means the team is not convinced he’s worth what he’s asking for. That’s always going to be contentious. It is not a desirable option. I guess it comes down to how you want to run your NFL franchise.

His agent will be very familiar with dealing with the Cowboys for large contracts. He’s involved in negotiations with Jerry for one of his clients now. It’s going to be a big contract.

Explain. Why?
IMO Giving up a third for a risky 1 year rental, and there is no guarantee about how good the comp pick will be, is not what this team should be doing. This team should be acquiring picks not trading them away. It's not like this roster is a WR away from contending. Our defense is still in poor shape. They should be planning now for when we can move on from the Dak era. A 3rd next year would still be on his rookie deal depending when they cut ties with Dak.
