VP who built up Patriots' Super Bowl teams signs contract extension

FOXBORO, Mass. (AP) -- Scott Pioli, who helped build the New England Patriots teams that have won three of the last four Super Bowls, has agreed to a contract extension as the team's vice president of player personnel.

Terms of the extension that will keep Pioli with the Patriots were not disclosed.

Robert Kraft, the Patriots' chairman and chief executive, said Pioli "has done a tremendous job managing our personnel department and overseeing the draft for us."

Pioli, 40, joined the Patriots in 2000 along with coach Bill Belichick. The team won a Super Bowl title in Pioli's and Belichick's second season in New England. Since that victory, the team has repeated as Super Bowl champs two more times, including this year's 24-21 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.

This year's win marked the first time in NFL history that a head coach and a personnel director had celebrated three Super Bowl titles in four years together, the Patriots said.

After the 2003 season, Pioli became the youngest person ever to earn the NFL Executive of the Year honors when he won at the age of 39. He won the award again in 2004.

His success has made him one of the most desirable candidates for vacant executive jobs around the NFL and several teams looking for new general managers have approached him. Pioli had always said he would not consider another job until his contract with the Patriots had expired.

Before the extension, it was due to run out after the 2006 season.

Despite what some on this board believed (you know who you are), we never had a legitimate shot at him. He was always going to stay in New England.

I think Dallas fans need to prepare for a stinging fact: New England is the odds on favorite for winning the Super Bowl again. That's right: 4 out of 5 years.

Granted they had some losses, but they had some nice pickups, as well. And right now, I don't see anyone who'd I bet on against them in the Big Game. Pittsburg might be a competitor depending on how Big Ben does in the Sophmore Campaign. Philly? Well, its Philly.

Really, I am thinking New England is going to win again, and that would be special and, unfortunately, would overshadow our run in the 90's.

Well the way the fans talking around here you would think that Bill Parcells could go to the superbowl and win...We have witness the panthers come close, but called some silly plays...

New England is doing there best to keep what they have, even if that means retaining some of its front office (Pioli). It is only natural that they sign their VP to an extension because they lost much when Charlie Weiss defected for Notre Dame and Romeo Krennel became the Brownies HC.

New England will almost have too much pressure to repeat, which would seperate themselves from the glory teams of GB, Pitt, SF, and Dallas and put them atop all dynasties. IMHO, it just won't happen. New England will be the favorite, and a good team, but will not win next year's Super Bowl.
