yimy-- for a couple of years i lived in Las Vegas...i worked at Jim Feist sports...gambling joint...i saw so much money lost it terrified me..i mean the top salesman in my crew made 250,000 a year and still rented furniture....he bet it all and slept in the hall.....i played a little black-jack but that was it..i mean like once a month...and i bet minimum each hand too..made me too nervous

I used to be obsessed with that place. Tried every angle I could find to get an edge and then finally accepted there was none unless you cheated and/or counted cards, neither of which were an option for me. Fortunately I never got the addiction I see others fall prey to all too often.

Then I discovered poker at Super Bowl XXX and started playing every chance I got, even tried to go pro in 98 before the poker boom but the only game back then was limit poker and Vegas kicked my *** so I came back with my tail between my legs after a month or so but kept playing for fun every chance I got.

Then, online poker & Moneymaker kicked off the poker boom and for a while I was printing money but alas, that dried up for all but the best of the best. The guys & gals who have played millions of hands online and study the game relentlessly are far better than I'll ever be so I hung em up and haven't played or been to Vegas in about 5 years. I miss the excitement and passion I once had for poker but I'm afraid poker is on its last legs, at least for me it is.

I'm sure I crossed your path without ever realizing it.

did you ever go to the Gold Coast?

yes, I went to the WSOP right next door at the RIO every year and even downtown when it was at Binions. Didn't venture to GC often but did occasionally. When were you there?

One of the poker groups I participated in would meet at the Gold Coast bowling alley during the WSOP. There's also a really good Chinese food restaurant in there as well, cant remember what it was called though, good and authentic

Did you live at that little 2 or 3 story extended stay place, maybe where the Palms casino is now or perhaps behind it? I stayed there when I would stay for a week+. Used to play at The Orleans a lot before the poker boom

lol, the guys that have the gamble to win that much $$ ALWAYS lose it back.

Ever heard of Archie Karas? He was playing craps at Binions Horseshoe in the late 80's or early 90's and was up like 40 million dollars and his friends were BEGGING him to at least put a few million away and he wouldn't do it because he was trying to win the entire casino. You can guess what happened...

Its changed a lot since then hasn't it?

My first year was in 1985 at the age of 18. I won a trip to Vegas at a casino night at my university and we stayed at the Dunes (now the Bellagio) and even saw Redd Foxx.

Yowza, I've officially crossed the fuddy-duddy, old-fart line and am talking about things and people that anyone reading is probably thinking who? What?

I’ve made a lot of predictions on this board and most have panned out but I’ve never guaranteed anything. Guarantees are usually the kiss of death unless you’re Joe Namath.

Namath's guarantee was the greatest of all time....no one will match that one...20 point underdog and guarantee victory and then pull it off...then next year AFL did it again when Chiefs manhandled Minnesota.....AFL was no longer weak little brother...after that year it became NFC and AFC

This is what drives me nuts about some gamblers. They'll win big money, and then, instead of doing the smart thing and quitting right then and there to secure their $$$, they promptly blow away what they had just won.

It's the equivalent of a quarterback, holding a four-point lead in a game with just mere seconds remaining, throwing a pick-six to lose the game, rather than just kneeling out the clock.

That guarantee and win over the Colts in the SB made Joe Namath’s career. It comes up in every interview with him and that’s all he ever talks about. It pretty much made him the most famous football player ever, except for maybe O.J. Simpson.

The 1st time I went to Vegas,Redd was playing, I kick myself for not seeing him when I had the chance.

Haha, I got some funny and sad stories about Vegas, the time I won gloriously the first night I was there, then the trip home 4 days later I had 8 bucks and some change in my pocket.:lmao2:Saw a drunk sit down at the Blackjack table next to me late one night, he was drunk and from all appearances wasn't that great of a player. He was betting 100$ a hand and losing every freaking time. The female Asian dealer didn't look to torn up about taking his money.
Also had a friend go into a local Indian Casino once and won a little over 20 grand, he bought himself some new clothes, a steak dinner and the rest{you guessed it} went right back to the Casino. Not making light of his addiction but gambling addictions are real and sad. Some people have no control.

Gambling addiction is no joke, seriously. When I was in college at UT, I had a roommate that was addicted to day trading. In his dorm room he had like 5 computer monitors going with stock tracking and online trading and a TV going with CNBC on it, he was like hard core. Dude would cut class and just sit there trading for like 8-10 hours at a time. Even when the markets closed, he would get into after hours trading and then got into futures trading. Dude was addicted, he kept telling me that making money off trading was better than sex, lol, I said sure bro, whatever.

Dude graduated and went to work for a finance company and literally spent his whole salary on day trading and then started borrowing money to trade even more and got way overextended. The market then went through a correction after the tech bubble burst, and the guy lost everything. He lost his house, his car, his job, his savings, and he was a couple of hundred thousand in debt. He had to move back home and live with his parents and ended up getting some crap job at a Ford Dealership. Just sad what happened to him all because he couldn't control his addiction.

He broke the number one rule of gambling/trading/betting or whatever you want to call it...……...never risk money you cant afford to lose!;)
