FALCONS CHOP CRUMPLER, OTHERS

Posted by Mike Florio on February 15, 2008, 1:42 p.m.

During the 2007 season, Falcons tight end Alge Crumpler publicly complained that then-coach Bobby Petrino was trying to phase out veteran players.

Now, the team is merely tossing them to the curb.

Crumpler has been released by the Falcons. He was signed through 2010, and due to earn $3.4 million in base salary in 2008.

In addition to Crumpler and defensive tackle Rod Coleman, who was cut earlier in the day on Friday, the team has released left tackle Wayne Gandy, quarterback Byron Leftwich, cornerback Lewis Sanders, linebacker Marcus Wilkins, and receiver Jamin Elliot.

Injury problems, he sucked last year.....(as in, he was dropping catches all over), he did that last year too.....supposedly, he wasn't a great locker room influence THIS year, high cap number, rebuilding, etc.
In 2004 he signed a 6yr 26 million dollar contract. With only two years left and at 4.3 million a year average, I don't exactly think he has a huge cap number. Sure looks like he would have had some trade value. I mean if Roy Williams can bring a first and third. ;)

Please keep this guy away from the eagles, he's way better than LJ Smith whom they are franchising.

Not so sure about that. Crumpler really looked terrible at times last year. I wouldn't be worried if the Eagles signed him.

CL, in that quote you posted, this is what I found most interesting...

Could it be Phillips held back a bit last year?

Awesome insight, and I was thinking something similar. Wade was complex at times, but he seemed to drum it down a bit defensively, in terms of blitx packagaes and exotic packages. This also struck a chord with me:

"People don't understand the subtle ways he helps our defense," says defensive coordinator Wade Phillips. "We were fourth in the league in sacks last year. When we blitzed, we never had to worry about leaving Keith in single coverage, because he can cover just about anybody."

Maybe, after Akin and Bradie got burned some in coverage, Wade had to drum down the blitzing.

I'm just cracking up how Bradie James is still a whipping boy around here, despite the fact that he was one of Wade's favorite players and bragged on him just about every single press conference.

Man, once you become persona non grata in internet messageboard land it's just about impossible to shake it.

I could see the Packers jumping to sign Crumpler. A TE could help that offense.

People keep saying they need a TE, but Donald Lee was pretty good for them last year.

Whipping boy? While Bradie James improved dramatically, he was still taken out in clear passing plays. I guess that means Wade doesn't like him? The fact is Bradie can't cover that well. He may have improved in his coverage skills, but that is different than saying he does it well.

It is obvious he would be a liability in certain blitz packages...

I always wished we would have drafted him.

I just KNEW we were going to take Brooking in 1998 and when we passed on him to take Ellis I was very disappointed. I would love to get him even now as he would likely replace Ayodele inside and give us a bigger playmaker at the position.

He is an outstanding tackler and is excellent in coverage. Great instincts and very solid in his technique. He may have slowed a step but not much and has been a very productive player throughout his career. He learned behind Jessie Tuggle who I believe should be in the HoF except, like former Falcons Center Jeff Van Note, he played for some sucky Atlanta teams.

Brooking has the size to play in the 3-4 very well and has done so in the past without any diminishing in his production.

If he is released I hope we jump at the chance to bring him in.

if Brooking does get cut a lot of my Falcons friends are gonna be heart broken. He's really been there only consistant talent and he grew up in Atlanta, played high school and college there.

If he is cut, I wouldnt be shocked if he resigned for less money.

I am at a loss as to why they could not get any trade value for CRumpler. I mean at least something. He is at least worth a 4th or 5th rounder isn't he?

Randy Moss was a 4th rounder. I dont think he and Alge carry the same trade value

I'd think he would be worth something . . . . he was considered one of the top TEs in the league a couple years ago.

thats the key words

thats like saying we could trade RW for a 1st b/c he was an elite safety three years ago.

Oakland had little leverage and Moss was a big questionmark at that point in time

Well, I guess he could have really fallen off over the last 2 years, or maybe it was the terrible situation in Atlanta which also led to his decline in production . . . .

Not saying that we need him, of course. Just making an observation.

true, but I dont think Alge would attract much, if anything, at this point.

He was injured all year, and dropped huge passes left and right. Three or four time he was wide open in the end zone and just dropped the ball. He's like Troy Williamson now. ( maybe thats a bit extreme) but you get the picture. It's a big mental block.

I was somewhat surprised by the Crumpler move. The rest pretty much didn't surprise me at all.

I don't see Brooking on that list and I just don't think you're going to see him getting cut. Maybe...but I doubt it.

What's the deal with Leftwhich these days? Could he be a backup to Romo consideration?
