Players we could have had instead of Lance

If we do not play Lance for at any point this season, here are the players we could have selected with the pick we wasted on Lance (mind you, if he plays, there's a chance we could get a comp pick if someone is impressed enough to give him a decent enough contract):

Had we not traded Lance, we would have had the 124th pick overall. The 49ers used that pick on Malik Mustapha, who tore us a new one a few weeks ago. To add insult to injury, he's a safety and we've struggled in that department. We could have had Isaac Guerendo, also taken by the 49ers. He looked pretty good a few weeks ago. You can see the other picks in the above link.

It's serendipity. The Trey Lance trade looks worse by the day for sure but there is no one for one formula that X would have happened if Y didn't. Jerry could have used that fourth to draft an even worse QB or traded it for some magic beans on his way home one day. I think your point, though, is the Trey Lance trade was a poor one and I would agree.

Especially since two of the players we could have had went to SFO and did a lot of damage to us. And yes, it's to point out what a waste of a 4th round pick that was considering that even now they don't want to play him. The smart thing would be to play him and try to see if we can boost his comp pick. If he doesn't play ahead of Rush, what message does that send to the rest of the league? The only logical reason to trade for him was to try to get a guy to replace Dak or to try to boost his comp picks to where we were basically getting Lance and a comp pick in the future. If we don't play him, he probably signs for a UFL team instead of another team. No comp picks gained there.

That's true with every team and every pick.

The draft isn't a sure thing.

The difference here is that, if we even now won't play Lance and try to boost his comp picks value, it becomes a completely waste of a pick. At least if he plays and shows some skills, there's a chance that another team signs him and we get the comp pick. By not playing him, we basically threw away a 4th round pick, and for what?

And they would have what difference HERE?

Dallas is still trying to win this season and Rush probably gives them the best shot, or at least Dallas thinks Rush gives them the best shot at winning. That tells me Lance is not very good. Players are playing for their futures and to hit contract incentives. I'd rather eat the Lance trade and move on then create an environment where the team doesn't do all it can to win each week.

Perhaps, but what's there to salvage of this season?

They could’ve had those guys regardless. They had two 3rd rounders to pick those guys.

Or just focus on the large hole at rb and Irving, RDavis, Allen, Estime, and Tracey were all there along with Guerendo in the 4th.

In hindsight that's easy to say. Jerry took a risk here and I salute him for it. Yes, the seemingly godlike Shanahan had no use for Trey, but Jerry should have tried to find a Dak replacement with a lot more vigor. It didn't work out but it could have. He had one good pre season game.

Long story short, with all the bashing Jerry deserves, I want him to look for QBs more aggressively.

It's more about the future. Players won't sign with Dallas if they see the team quits and plays third stringers over them. It's also about creating a culture where players play hard each week and push each other in practice. That carries over from year to year.

Right, I was just using those two as examples, but it's shocking to see all the players we could've had instead of wasting a pick on Lance when we clearly have no plans of actually playing him.

Since when do we spend on FA anyway?

I had no problem going for Lance. But a 4th was rich for a player they're clearly not going to play. I'm all for taking a chance, but if we were never going to play him, then we better either resign him or try to see if we can boost his comp pick value.

The problem with that theory is that pick was almost certainly going to be earmarked for a QB based on time since taking one and draft patterns of this team. Considering the over valuing for the position you’re looking at a 6th/7th round talent in that spot or at best a Mike White type who is released after a season or 2. They took a shot at a player who was considered a top 10 talent 2 seasons prior with a 4th round pick. It didn’t work out… move along!

I’m actually more pissed over this Mingo thing. Possible recency bias, but it confirms that they actually DO think this is a good roster and this guy will make a difference.

The price for a draft bust is swapping 6ths and 7ths, but Jerry insists on giving up 4ths.

Well hey at least people are “talking about the Cowboys!” What a mess.

This guy doesn’t know the offense and won’t be able to work with Dak for at least a month. ZERO impact for this season. None.
