Playing for Pride

I am sorry, I know this is a rehash but with the rest of the circus in town for 16 weeks I think it is being overlooked.

Am I the only one that is disgusted by players mocking playing for pride? To me, this is the at the heart and soul, or lack thereof, of the problem with this team. This organization is full of business men from top to bottom with a few football minds and grid iron gladiators mixed in for flavor.

If I am a coach or owner and a player scoffs at playing for pride, he would immediately be on the chopping block. Without pride you are hopelessly bound to mediocrity. Pride fuels the fire in the heart that leads teams to guttural wins that generally define seasons and great teams.

I know it will be wildly unpopular but with the shape of this brand (it is not a team or a franchise, the Cowboys are a brand right now) I would cut every player that thumbed their noses at playing for pride. As long as we the fans and the management are forced to endure this abysmal excuse for a team we should at least have the treat of watching players who have a passion for the game.

That is all from me but I am really interested to hear others opinions on the subject.

Anyone who doesn't play for pride shouldn't be on this team next season. We'll never win with players like that

Agreed, if you dont want to play for pride then go play for Buffalo or Detroit, we dont play that here in Dallas.

We have too many players with the mindset that once we were out of playoff contention, there was nothing left to play for so lets just all quit.

Those are the losers that have to be purged, even if it is a star player.

If you're not gonna play for pride (which anyone who works should) then play for your paycheck. Play for the fans who paid good money. Play for the tv stations that put you on air, thinking you were good and would go down fighting and would be willing to put you on national tv again. Play for your teammate. You play and try hard, so you can look yourself in the mirror with some sort of dignity as a human being.

Hand over your paycheck and walk away, you lowlife.

I think there's a lot of truth in this. Some people have said that players come to Dallas (or stay in Dallas until they're a FA) to get paid by Jerry. I never believed it all that much, but maybe there's something to it. Take Gerald Sensabaugh... He's always been a pretty good player who at least played hard. But he's quit as much as anyone this year. It's almost like once he realized this year was going to stink and he likely wasn't going to get his big payday, he threw up his hands and said, "What's the use."

Every decent team pays their best players, so I don't know what's different here. Probably that they are such "stars" here even before they've really done anything. Or maybe it's even that the constant circus keeps the focus off them. How much heat has Miles Austin really gotten for all these drops? Not much.

As for cutting all the players who don't look prideful... You still can't cut all the talented ones. Take Jenkins for instance -- he's barely trying out there much of the time. But you don't cut him, because the next coach can probably get more out of him. If that new coach thinks guys don't have any guts, that's when they get cut.

.
Buffalo and Detroit are playing with pride. The Lions are winning games and the Bills are losing, but are in every game. That is more that can be said about these 2010 Cowboys.

well, this is largely the same pride-less group that mailed in the Texas Stadium finale, and the game at Philly in 08.

They've quit again the last 7 quarters.

The Cowboys were in every game until Romo got hurt. Then all of a sudden our defense died. I don't get it.

It's also the same pride-less group that won two of the last three NFC East titles. It is totally baffling to me.

I get the idea - and the most frustrating thing about the losing streak to many fans has been a perceived lack of effort. It's hard to argue with that.

But as a point of clarification, businesslike players win championships all the time. I think it's tough to argue that you need fiery players. In some locker rooms, maybe, and at some times that might be the right thing. But not always.

Who would you have said at the beginning of the year plays with the most "pride" on the offensive side of the ball? On the defensive side of the ball?

Okay, now, separate question - who would you say has been the least effective starter on the offensive side of the ball? On the defensive side of the ball?

You have a problem when the answers to both sets of questions are exactly the same: Colombo and Brooking.

Personally I wouldn't mind replacing the "proud" Brookings of the world with more "businesslike" Wares. I wouldn't mind subbing out the "proud" Colombos with the "businesslike" Kosiers and Frees.

I guarantee you the next coach that comes to Dallas will look at game tape and notice who mailed in and take that into consideration when structuring his team. Individually, they are playing for their future, right now.

I think the two teams you mention, Buffalo and Detroit, are playing as hard or harder than most teams out there; and Pride is all they have to play for at this point.
