By this line of thinking Derrick Johnson would be a Cowboy instead of DeMarcus Ware. I trust Ireland, you should too. They have a few more resources at their disposal than we as shadetree GMs do.

True.

But how would DJ be a Cowboy. I was adamently (sp?) opposed to DJ.

I wanted, in order, Ware, Merriman, DJ.

by the title of this thread Merriman and Ware were primarily DE in college while DJ was a true LB. If our scouts think Lawson can make the transition I trust them, that was the point I was making.

Mangold is a better prospect than Al Johnson was. Johnson was considered by many to be a reach.

Secondly, Mangold will not be a Cowboy, barring some major dealing....

Johnson was unable to bulk up before this season bec. of his injury...he has supposedly bulked up already.

The 2005 hate for Al Johnson was such a drastic contrast to the "Solid C for 10 years" love he got in 2004. I think the truth is somewhere in the middle.

Doesn't detract from the fact that most people had higher ratings for Mangold this year than Al Johnson when he came out.

I haven't given up on Al Johnson, for the record. I think he could still develop. He had a solid rookie year. But then he was injured, which prevented from putting on the necessary bulk before last season started. Supposedly, he has done that.

I think the recent rash of interior OL flops picked in the late 1st and early 2nd would be unquestioned reason NOT to pick Mangold

Mangold is rated no higher than Jeff Faine (flop), Al Johnson (pretty close to flop), Andre Gurode (ditto) and last years 1st rd flop Chris Spencer

How is Spencer a flop? Because he couldn't play on arguably the best line in football?

I think I'd give him an opportunity or two before I wrote him off.

he has already been written off for this yr too

Seattle drafted him because they perceived 36 yr odl Robbie Tobeck as a weak link...Spencer couldnt beat him last yr, and this yr they decided he wasnt even good enough to move to guard and compete for the spot vacated by Hutchinson...instead they signed Tom Ashworth

Spencer is a flop

After one year? Please. Try again. Center is responsible for calling out audibles, no? So they could be groooming him.

just keep right on believing that then

the guy was a 1st rd pick...he wasnt good enough to beat out a 36yr old center the team wanted to replace last yr and they have already said Tobeck is the starter this yr too...they dont consider him good enough to move to guard either

interior OL's are almost always poor uses of high draft picks, especially 1st rd picks
