Police scanner

Hey, for some reason my family got me a police scanner for Christmas.

Anyone of you boys or girls have one? If so, I could use some tips/advice on how to best use it.

Right now, I'm just trying to figure out how to use all the functions.

Mine is a Handheld Radio Scanner PRO-164 from Radio Shack.

I used to program sheriff ,fire, and police into the old ones. Went to Radio Shack and bought a book with the frequentcies in my area.I think now you can press scan and when it picks up a signal it will stop there until whomever quits talking,then keeps on scanning.
The drug and swat groups have their own freq.and we couldn,t get those.

The city I live in, I would be lucky to hear one thing on that scanner per month. :laugh2:

My town's 2009 crime statistics are: zero murders, zero rapes, 4 robberies, 10 assaults, 2 auto thefts, and zero arsons.

That was like my town, too. I don't know why my mom even bothered with it.

Not much crime at all in my area either, however I do know quite a few older people have these things running.
I think most people just listen for the emergency responders on the air. Ambulance going to so and so's house and etc.

I guess they use it as an early warning system for coming obituaries. :laugh2:

Who knows...kind of find all of that kind of morbid.

But I will say it is kind of scary how bad some of the services can be at time.

The in-laws have one. Rarely have it one but we were there one day they had it on and it was a conversation between dispatch and the ambulance driver.

They were headed to some location where there was someone having bad chest pains and they were having trouble finding the location. You could hear the dispatcher telling the driver exactly where to go but the driver must have had his head up his backside as he just could not grasp simple directions.


I just listened to it for 15 minutes and they driver still had no clue what the dispatch was telling him but we left to go home.

Never did hear if the person lived, whether it was just heart burn, heart attack or what it was.

I've got one of the old Realistic 2022's from Radio Shack. don't listen to it much,unless the weather is bad...snowy or icy. They tell me that this particular older model could also pick up cell phone calls with the right modification. I wouldn't know about that,as that is supposedly illegal.

I used to get someone's cell phone calls over our old baby monitor. It was pretty creepy.
