Aside from our overhauled defense, the wide receiver competition will be a good one. We have 3 locks: Bryant, Beasley, & Williams. We then have our specialty guys in: Whitehead, McDuffie, & Switzer. Then there are the big bodied backups: Butler, Brown, & Jones.

I am going into camp hoping Switzer pans out and wins out the KR/PR/WR role. He is already a better wide reciever than Whitehead and *Knockonwood* looks to be the most capable Beasley backup in case of injury.

I see Switzer getting more headlines but feel Butler/Brown/Jones is the bigger competition. Jones did work in camp last year but faltered when it counted-- in game. Butler is what he is, possibly faster than the two, occasionaly will make highlight places, a big guy who plays small (and I mean that in every possible way). Brown is the new toy and we'll have to wait and see but given all the information gathered, l see him as this years Andy Jones.

I think Andy Jones has a chance. He has a years worth of experience which could spell trouble for Butler who is on a 1 year deal. Jones was an undrafted guy so he needed some grooming, Tested @4.5 40/ 41 inch vertical, possesion, hand catcher, & like I said, did well last year in camp. All reasons I am rooting for him. Brown will end up on the P.S. to compete next year.

Whitehead is toast.

Whew.

I was afraid we wouldn't have unbridled Andy Jones love again this year.

Right now, I would count on Whitehead being the only one who loses his job, but it wouldn't surprise me for someone to beat out Butler. The advantage with Butler is his speed, but Garrett seems to prefer big, physical receivers on the outside over fast ones. I'm not counting Butler out because he has stepped up at times when we don't even know if Jones or Brown can do enough to deserve a reserve role.

You could say Switzer hasn't either, but really he only needs to be a better return option to beat out Whitehead.

sort of expect 6WR this year because 3 RBs instead of 4.
if switzer can handle nfl hits, then expect him to replace whitehead.
although we will likely carry 9 OL though so you never know.

He ran a 4.37 at his pro day.

Is he Desean Jackson? Of course not. But he's got speed. It's one of the reasons why the Cowboys like him. He's big and fast.
I've never seen it displayed in a real game bro. 4.37 I expect breaking away and not getting caught from behind

Your disdain for Butler, a 4th or 5th WR, is hilarious.

I mean what do you expect from the last WR on your roster? Larry Fitzgerald, circa 2011?

jerry rice.
the problem to me with butler is with his big time drops that are catchable.
may be he will improve on it.
but if he improves, he would be quite good and be gone next year.
in a way, better off to give time to train his replacement

Sub-4.4. According to the draft profile on him, he had a low of 4.27 and a high of 4.48. Of course, that was not at the combine, so pro day numbers are usually a little inflated.

Yeah surprises me too. It's not like we're asking any of our guys to run go routes 24/7. I think speed is one thing but for receivers, route running smarts/selling the route is a bigger factor to seperation. Big reason Witten and Beasley can do what they do.

I will be interested to see the battles for the last spot. I think it should be a good battle to watch. I hope we have a competent third QB. I am not sure how much time Moore is going to get coming back from injury and now listed as the backup. When you have a incompetent young QB, the games get really difficult to watch.

No doubt Butler is a flawed guy. Definitely has the case of the dropsies from time to time and his mental lapses at times have cost us.

But all this chatter about how he's likely gone for guys like Andy Jones and/or Noah Brown cracks me up. We do it every offseason, where we take apart a guy on the roster for not being good enough despite the fact he's only a minor role player. We did this with McFadden last year. He was a bum, a retread, didn't need him, with Morris signed he was expendable and yet McFadden looked like the better player when push came to shove.

Some guys just simply aren't popular with guys. Butler seems like one of those guys. Maybe Brown beats him out. Great. No skin off my butt. But for what he is, a 4th or 5th WR who has size and some speed? He's perfectly fine.

You've seen him get caught from behind?

I've seen him not create separation, but there's a lot of speed receivers who don't do that because they don't run crisp routes or have great footwork to draw the DB up and then blow by them or can't fight off physical defenders. Some also have to gather speed instead of being explosive out of their cuts.

Butler certainly doesn't make the best use of his speed because you can see some of those reasons working against him. He's one of those whose speed may always be a tease because he either is unable or unwilling to do the things that maximize it.

I remember one example where he got caught from behind. Against the Saints in 2015. Weeden hit him on a deep ball and he got tripped up, but it wasn't because he got outran, when he caught the ball he kind of stumbled allowing the defender to dive and trip him up.

For me the camp battle to watch is Noah Brown trying to unseat Brice Butler. Brown is fierce and physical but Butler has that speed Dallas has been missing. Can't wait for it.
