Positional importance

If your DLine cannot stop the run and disrupt the pocket, who you have at CB is irrelevant. The DLine in general is the most important part of a D, and it must be complete.

SEA's stellar D was due in large part to a completely dominant DLine and starter quality backups at DT. When Carroll let those guys walk, that D fell apart almost immediately.

It's the strangest thing, how NFL coaches who are supposedly masters at this game don't always understand what made them good/great.

Totally agree!

Name recognition is irrelevant. Is that what you're using to analyze? Name recognition?

That is the superficial way... you're right. Like the fan who only knows the players who score or throw but don't know that games are won in the trenches. I admit I came of as lame on the logic

That team just gelled like no other. They had a bunch of really nice players but they weren't fantastic but they just came together like men and bonded... and won one that way. Just a few more to go to catch up to Dallas. Lol
Perfect storm. D got them there, and then they played a NE team who had been giving up major yardage all year. As usual, the "only points matter" crowd got proven wrong once again as a playoff team turned those yards into points and made NE pay for not being able to stop anyone.

These ideas about the trenches and NT were presented to me a few years ago, along w/ how important your Center is. So, I dug in and researched and started paying attention, and I realized what I was being told had major credence. NT is more important than CB, and it's not close. Because the DLine is where it all starts, and if you are weak there it will resonate throughout your D.

The problem is that Jerry does not do research and study. He's still falling for the old "Follow the Ball" thing that fans are mostly guilty of.

It's weird because Dallas has been the best in the NFL over the last decade drafting in the first round but they just can't seem to find that star DT. Could you imagine Parsons impact if he was protected by a couple studs in front of him.

Though I get all your points and 100% agree on collapsing the pocket I don't think there's a GM in the league that will take the top NT over the top CB. Just wait to you see what Diggs gets paid. It will be more the double the top NT in the league makes. Your point about having good interior DLine hides mediocre CB play is totally spot on. But maybe it's just semantics. Maybe NT are more important but they are a lot easier to land then a top CB. So maybe that's why we don't agree.

They don't try, and when they do, they don't understand the position.

The top? That's not what we're talking about. We're talking about taking the position. Cincy just did year before last, BTW, and Reader was absolutely instrumental in making the super bowl.
