Positives and Negatives?

Offense is looking great without Miles out there.....imagine when he comes back

Secondary isn't that bad, especially since Newman and Jenkins are not out there...we finally have 2 safeties that can play ball(and i won't lie i was for making a big safety splash)..they are almost always in position....so imagine them with 2 healthy Newman and Jenkins

Scandrick? He's playing great, i wont lie....preseason or not, another guy, always in position(so far)

Negatives-

O-line.....i won't say we suck at pass blocking...we just have to pick the blitz up better. for the next 2 weeks Garret should have them practice learning to block the blitz...if you can do that 4 man rush means nothing

D-Line....we have to stop the run..i don't know what Ratliff can change between now and later, but he has to change, hes getting pushed back

a few things to work on.....hopefully with Miles back....if teams want to blitz, we can make them pay

The secondary isn't awful, but it could be better. It's clear that we've had our 3rd and 4th and even 5th guys out there playing CB, and they have been holding their own. I'm not worried about Newman, I know he can cover, and can gamble a little bit more now with Abe Elam out there, but hopefully Jenkins comes back more like 2009 Jenkins and not Pass Interference Jenkins from last year. If he can even bridge that gap halfway, we'll be in very good shape.

I agree. He's active, he looks confident out there, and he's not afraid to hit someone.

Well, we had some new blood out there, including an undrafted guy, but they look pretty good for a backup unit with a couple of starters sprinkled in. They do a pretty good job run blocking, which I'm happy about. Felix Jones looks great picking up the blitz.

A little worried here...we got pushed around on the line of scrimmage. I think Ratliff got double teamed all night...we need Spears out there occupying blockers and pushing the pocket. Igor Olshansky is largely done.

Scandrick has had a radical attitude adjustment with the new contract. He came across as a malcontent in interviews in the weeks before he resigned. Now he's talking like a guy who is confident not only in his ability but in the trust this team has in him.

I watched this interview after the game last night and came away from it convinced he's got his mind right.

i agree heavily with your assessment of the secondary and D-line

I'm just not as worried about the secondary as everyone else here. I was worried about the secondary last season when we released Ken Hamlin. The transition from CB to FS is not something that you can just do in one off-season without being among the best in the game (Rod Woodson, Deion with the Ravens).

You can't just go from being responsible for man coverage against WRs and flat/mid zones to being responsible for everything on one half of the field 10 yards off the ball and deeper. It's not easy at all...you have to train yourself to see the flow of the play in the backfield while backpedaling and at the same time peripherally watch potential pass-catchers not only running at you, but crossing from one side of the field potentially into your zone, out of the backfield, Tight Ends, etc.

If anyone was going to make that transition last year it should have been someone like Newman - a top-tier CB - not Alan Ball, who barely had seen the field in the NFL even as a CB.

At any rate, I digress -- I think the secondary is in a much better position this year than last year. Abe Elam is going to be a big part of that.

I won't lie, i thought alan ball would have been a good FS, off physical talent, but like you said, it's more than that.

I'm excited about Abe and how he will potentially make everybody better

Watching first half right now -- If Berrian doesn't push off on McCann in the 2nd quarter, McCann probably picks the ball off by the end zone.

I really like McCann...I think he has a shot to be a starter in a season or two. I hope he sticks on the 53. I think he's better than Alan Ball already.
