Possible Cuts: D. Wilson & M. Hooker

The type of safeties you can get by with but no point in keeping if you're going to rebuild. Hooker was a good value pickup. Haven't seen any great years of value pickups since DQ put his freshman year requests in. This team needs GM-minded Coaches to have any success in FA.

Who rebuilds with the highest paid offensive and defensive player in the league?

Hooker can use questionable DL play as reason but Wilson has been used as a LBer type than an actual coverage guy. Wilson is now 30 and he is not going to get better at his biggest weakness which is coverage.
Whoa!
You mean they used the strong safety in the box while playing cover 3. That’s outrageous!!!
Wilson was a nickel corner his first 3 seasons in college. Just because they’ve primarily used him in run support doesn’t mean he can’t cover if they made that his primary responsibility.
They were ranked 5th in pass defense in 2023 with him playing strong safety after all.
Regardless, he is worth more in run support than the measly 3m savings they would get and I’d think the whole point is moot… if they were going to release him they’d at least given him the respect to do so before FA!

Thomas and Bell look pretty decent in their roles, but we do not know how they will do as full time starters. Safety was an area of concern for nearly 2 decades after Woodson and Williams left. Is it really a good idea to cut bait with a couple of good starters and start from scratch now that there is some stability there? Saving money is nice, but we are not even using the money that is available now. I would only consider it if there is a clear upgrade on the roster, or ready to sign.

I thought Wilson was really coming on but he dropped off big time last year - missed tackles at critical times and a liability in coverage

Hooker is just terrible. Period

They used both June 1st designations for this season.
With the accelerated dead cap you’d save about 3.2m on Wilson and a little over 1m on Hooker.
You do so despite both players having PFF scores in the mid 60s in a season with questionable DLine play, with 2 UDFA who haven’t been able to outright win the position nor stay healthy as possible replacements and create another hole to fix in the draft.
It’s one of the few positions that looks fairly strong or at least stable … just doesn’t seem worth it for a couple million in cap space!
I know Martin was one, but who was the other June 1st?

Sure, just pick up a safety or two in the draft.

Of course they also need a corner, get that in the draft also.

They absolutely must add to the DT rotation, can look at the draft for that.

They need at least one starter at LB and depth. Draft ought to be sufficient for that.

Oh, probably getting an edge rusher in the draft would be a good idea.

They also need some speedy playmakers on offense, and it’s best to draft them since they are generally expensive.

Doesn't make sense to cut either of them. It's not like we're going to spend the money on starting caliber safeties in free agency.

Already have about 6 bigger needs in the draft.

Please… they were clueless the whole season. I think both of them took turns with not having any idea where the ball was at times. sheesh. Please.

Never trust a Hooker

It was interesting to see the contract M. Bell received being a 3 yr deal, so that probably means the Staff has a plan for him. Hard to believe they cut both starting safeties, but maybe a trade could be in the works.
