Possible reason they chose Howell over Milton

Cowboys fans are starving for a 6’5” 235-240lb QB with a Bazooka for an arm and who can run around and through defenders. This is why people don’t like the choice between the two qb’s. People want hope.
I can draw up game plans to win easily with Milton. Go watch Lamar Jackson's career. Milton is a problem for Defenses. Easily avoids a rush and has a chance to make a run\throw to avoid a negative play.

We"re so used to having no depth at QB that people panic when a borderline NFL QB is released in preseaon.

I dont have much faith in our front office, but if you trawl final cuts out there, Im sure we could upgrade the 3rd QB position.

This might have been mentioned in one of the other threads, but just in case it was not ..

I'm not sure the decision was based on which player was better.

If the Cowboys had released Howell and no one claimed him, they would have still had to pay him $2 million for the 2026 season (it's guaranteed) along with the $500k already paid to him as a signing bonus (so $2.5 million money and salary cap hit).

By releasing Milton, if he's not claimed then the Cowboys owe him nothing and will take no salary cap hit and can bring him back to their PS if he wants to return.

Since Schottenheimer said they were "neck and neck", that likely explains why they chose to release Milton when they needed the roster spot for Demearcado.
I really don't believe it had anything to do with money i'm serious Most of us watched preseason and yes Milton improved We saw it but I saw a whole bunch of undrafted rookies and some other rookies look just as good in preseason and they didn't even win a qb2 job With their teams and some of them were cut.

Get it there's emotions running wild here but how Outside of a couple of interceptions there the numbers were almost even you're gonna take the guy who has experience the Cowboys are not in the business to hand the keys to the castle that they just built they rebuilt the defense they're hoping for improvement from the special teams they've spent two years with a new coaching staff trying to hone this offense to make it one of the best offenses in the league and if you're QB1 goes down You do not hand the keys to a player who has not yet proven he can play in this league at all like no experience at all in games that means something real games don't give me that last game in New England nonsense...

You look at the last preseason game things look pretty even yes one has more upside a bigger arm more mobility he's deserving of a spot on the roster but Milton is not the guy you hand the keys in long relief to a team like this..

This is not a rebuilding team looking for a quarterback This is the opposite you will always go with a veteran with experience over the other guy it has nothing to do with money but they did pay him more money because of what veteran experience in this league it is what is required therefore they're paying for experience and they're using him and made him QB two for experience..

. Milton is at a place that he's might turn the corner and become good he may be Tyrod Taylor maybe Jacoby Brissett at best maybe better but I'm telling you right now he's not ready he needs to be one of those guys you put in for the last 5 games of a lost season But until the season's lost you use a guy like Cooper Rush and that is Howe,

howell is Cooper Rush with a little bit more mobility...

Find this a little concerning and that people don't see both sides of this the Cowboys have changed a lot of their nature the last two years they just cut Sam Williams who they gave two million in guaranteed money and you're telling me this two million means more to them than the other two million and it must be money it has to be money I just now shut this down but I made you read all my rambles before that because I'm tired of hearing how the Cowboys are so stupid and yeah all these other great moves the last two years are being forgotten all these other moves whether you lose money hell I think Malik Hooker could have been cut, Don't think this team is operating that way anymore they are not keeping players that are fan favorites they're not keeping players just because of contracts that cost too much they are making business decisions in Milton and my opinion wasn't ready and I said this three days ago I argued with a few guys on here that I thought Howell was going to get the QB2 and people said I was crazy and I was delusional and I was actually correct..

Because if it was my team I would love someone better than howl but QB2 kind of hard to find a player that's equal to your starter but I'm taking Howell over Milton in this situation every time..

His last game really gave him the edge I'm not sure I'm buying that, however I do feel like he's the more traditional option to have at QB. Not saying he's great, not saying that Milton sucks. It's a trust issue to me
A 100% not about Money or Sam Williams would have been kept over wheat, Glad I can shut that down before it goes too crazy,

This front office is operating differently they are not keeping guys just because of contracts You're right they went veteran experience all things were pretty equal other than upside this preseason I have seen a dozen quarterbacks look just like Milton and both of them are not getting the keys to a team like the Cowboys this is not a rebuilding team this is a team that has expectations over the next two seasons and are not handing it to a green inexperienced player like Milton...

Yes Milton has more upside but what I knew to be true they liked Cooper Rush but being he wasn't special they tried to replace him Money was getting a little big and they were right But Sam Howell is Cooper Rush with a little bit better wheels that's it that is why I knew they were gonna keep him because he did not look terrible he did not lose the job in preseason that's the way you need to look at it..

I don't think either one of these players actually won the preseason that's why it was equal all things being equal they went with experience not money experience you paid for experience that is what the league salary cap is set up veterans get paid more typically...

The Cowboys had game plans to win with Cooper Rush until they didn't. Milton is nowhere close to Lamar Jackson in terms of reading defenses, throwing with anticipation, touch, or accuracy, let alone as a runner.

The fact Milton making a few great throws this preseason was celebrated as progress tells me all I need to know. He's not ready to be a long term starting QB. He might be some day. But not now.

Before the game against the Saints. Brian S said on the pregame show. Howell was slightly ahead of Milton going into PS game 1. Which was why he got that start. And sounded like he was still slightly ahead.
And that takes into account everything, TC and practices, meetings and such (but that is my conjecture based on what he said).

With Howell's stronger performance in that las game made the difference.
Howell was consistent in all 3 games except those 2 picks. But was it all on him. Milton kind of crapped the bed in his 3rd opportunity.

......couple of Podcasts said, the possibility being told he would be 3rd string.

Milton asked to be released then.

More than that, I think people saw potential with Milton for a successor or good ROI. From my perspective, it seems premature to release a guy who generally performed well in the preseason who was always going to be a project.

So either the coaches saw something different, we've made a cap focused move, or we've decided on an insurance policy rather than an investment. And personally, I'm only a fan of the first option.

First of all I find that hilarious and ironic that there are teams out there that constantly had pretty damn good backup quarterbacks that they traded away And in this case I guarantee they tried it something with a trade here's my scenario of what might have happened I think the Cowboys made up their depth chart made a call in the Milton says you're QB3 he got mad said I want to be cut i'm angry I don't want to be here anymore I want to chance somewhere else and the Cowboys gave him his request. request

Remember that other guy that did that number eleven right he forced his way out we don't know what went on behind the scenes but you're exaggerating over Milton's possible replacement of Prescott This dude at best might be Tyrod Taylor....

Why why I just really want to know why you think that if we need to get to the 3rd quarter back to somehow you don't know our season's over right I mean none of that's working out for the rest of the season I mean that happens usually a Prescott goes down You better hope it's for like less than 5 games 'cause even howl is not gonna get it done long term He's a long reliever Milton he's a guy you get when the season's over to get in more work in real games But QB3 yes we need an emergency 3rd quarterback they will get an emergency 3rd quarterback everyone's bringing an emergency guy off the practice squad onto the active game day that doesn't count against your 47 or whatever they bring to a game..

But y'all acting like it's critical have apparently not been around the NFL very long but when you have to go to your 3rd guy it is over OVER capital over...

Why not keep all 3? Makes no sense to have only 2 QBs on the roster.

If Dak has to miss a couple games, we must then sign a backup that has to be ready in 5 days in case our backup gets banged up.
This is my issue. I don't care if they pick Howell or Milton as their #2. Six of one...

But having only 2 QBs on the roster is really taking a risk. Milton has practiced with the team. He knows the playbook, the coaches, his teammates. Why not keep him as the 3rd guy just in case. If Dak gets hurt, and many expect he will, Howell is not going to be an adequate replacement, neither is Milton. But let's say Dak gets hurt mid-season. Who will be available off the street to back up Howell? There will be slim lickings and probably no one equal to Milton.

They kept 6 safeties! They couldn't cut one of those guys to make room for a 3rd QB?

Yes one lowest potential but also has to understand the coaching staff in the front office has done a lot to try to build this team up missed the playoffs two straight years and are not handing the keys to the castle to a green still developing player So they had to make a choice they went with the veteran whether that was a good decision or bad we will find out but I understand why Cooper rush with wheels that is Sam Howell they want someone with some veteran experience like in real games That doesn't mean Sam Howell technically won the job but it was pretty even in the games that I saw and all things being even you go with the veteran that is why they had to pay him more to be on this team because that's how the rules are set up has nothing to do with money this was not personal it was all business and that's all the Cowboys have been the last two years they are not handing the keys in QB2 long relief to a green quarterback who needs more work.

They're not going to use a critical part of the season if that's when an injury happens to Dak and give it to Milton that was never going to happen I said it wasn't going to happen and I'm right I like Milton but you can't run your business when you're trying to build a roster with limited roster spots and limited money by thinking about what might be..

Tell me now on how good Gabriel looked in the last game for the Browns and where he is on their depth chart they're keeping four quarterbacks which I think is stupid ridiculous watson shouldn't be starting but if you want to talk about mistakes or you want to talk about how good some of these undrafted guys or these rookies looked in pre-season I can find a dozen I'm not saying that Milton can't be Tyrod Taylor or Jacoby Brissett or something but we are way over thinking this i'm sorry he wasn't ready for QB2 in the eyes of a seasoned team that's a win now not a rebuild..

It's not a risk they will put a quarterback on the practice squad like usual they will bring him up every single week as an emergency 3rd quarterback he will be not counting against the game day actives all teams have one they will get there how about you wait until it's settled down and everybody clears waivers and they have their list together for the team to actually put that guy on the list before we start throwing this guy is falling umbrellas,,ughh

I don't think anyone that Schotty didn't bring in or who isn't All Pro or extended could go at anytime. Nobody outside of that seems safe.

I would say Howell from the get go had an advantage the moment he signed his contract.
Milton has the better raw arm talent, but if Dak misses 1-4 games, would the coaches trust Milton over burning 2.5mil?
QB talent is at a premium, and no other team was willing to even give a 7th for Milton.
Maybe he blossoms later, here or elsewhere, or doesn't at all. But his value has never been that high.

So knowing this if he didn't would he have won the job over hiwell if he played better

Possibly. But we do not know all the other stuff.
How did they do in practice.
Does Howell pay more attention in meetings.
Did he grasp the offense better.

All the intricacies that go on, that we fans, and the media at times are not privy to.
