Hey Zoners...does anyone live in Atlanta? My wife and I are most likely moving the family from Cleveland, OH and Atlanta is one of the places we're looking at. The weather and better job markets are the two biggest reasons why we're moving. I read that there's a lot of Cowboys bars in Atlanta. Is this article accurate?

Any info on Atlanta would be great, thanks!

I just moved back to Virginia from Atlanta. Lived there 2 years.

Don't know about Cowboy's bars, though.

What did you think of Atlanta?

It was a fun two years. It's a great city. I would have probably liked it better if I was single w/o kids and didn't work so much (I spent a lot of time in Tennessee as well during the time I live there) or had some friends that lived there. I really missed my friends and family, I move there without knowing anyone, except coworkers.

I lived in Woodstock, which is north, outside the perimeter, near Canton. Housing is super cheap in the suburbs. If I was to do it again, I would live in the city. Maybe Grant Park area. There's a lot to do. I love hiking and there are some prime spots (the beginning of the Application Trail was an hour from my spot). The beltline is fun and there is always something going on in the city. Tons of great eats. Braves games are great. Sweetwater brewery is fun. They have a great aquarium and a good zoo. Nashville is close and also a great city.

It get's super hot in the summer and traffic is terrible, but I'm sure you know that. It's 45 minutes to go anywhere. There's crime, but that's with any big city.

I'm a beach bum, though and really missed the ocean, so I'm glad to be back.

Thanks for all of the great info! We're actually looking at the Canton and Woodstock areas. We're looking to rent first and then possibly buy in a year or two no matter where we go. It all depends on where my wife can find a job. I'm a stay at home dad and photographer. My wife does curriculum and instructional technology and training. There's not a lot of jobs in Cleveland and she wants to leave her current job for multiple reasons.

I will give you some info. Don't move to Atlanta. Hell, don't move to Georgia! That entire state sucks! It has to be the most HOT AND HUMID state in existence!

Lol. Wait more hot and humid than Florida?! What state/city would you recommend that isn't more than 10-15 hours away from Cleveland and doesn't get tons of snow?

was gonna say just move to Texas. I hear the job market in most cities is booming and I'm sure there's plenty of Cowboy's bars. A bit further than 15 hours drive to OH though.

Florida has the ocean (gulf) breeze to keep it somewhat cool. (water on the east side doesn't help, due to the jetstream going west to east)

By 15 hours, I guess you mean driving. Hmm, you can move in with @BrAinPaiNt. Though I'm not sure how much snow they get there. If he is in the mountains, probably a lot.

Yeah Texas is great but it is a little too far from Ohio. We'd like to still be within 10 hours or so driving distance to visit family. I shouldn't have made a big deal about Cowboys bars being a factor because it's not lol. I thought it was cool that Atlanta has so many of them.

I lived in Atlanta for 9 years and hated it. I think it's an awful city. Not much really going on there for the size of the city and you're stuck in traffic all day. So, get used to traffic and work and that's it.

The job market is bigger than most places, but far more competition as Atlanta has the highest rate of 4-year grads per capita. Employers know this and take full advantage. When I moved to Florida, despite not having worked in 2 years...I was able to get a 30% raise in pay from my last job in Atlanta and the cost of living was noticeably less (and no state income tax).

I also think that Atlanta has some of the worst weather you'll find. It's nice for about 2 months (September and October). It is about 25 degrees colder than Orlando in the winter months, but even worse the weather in the winter gets right around freezing and Atlanta is the last place you want to be icy because it's so hilly and they have trees everywhere and a tree branch will snap and go thru your car window.

Atlanta actually gets more rainfall than Seattle, but the runoff and the overpopulation causes many droughts. So you don't get any of the benefits of the rainfall and if you don't reach your normal rainfall, you're in a drought.

In the Spring you get the worst pollen you'll ever see. There's so much pollen in the Spring that there is a green mist that goes over the cars, buildings, etc. And then in the summer time it's almost as hot as Orlando. It's really crummy weather overall.

You'll meet a lot of fraudulent people there as well. Lots of people leading 'double lives' or always trying to scam you out of something. To give an example, if you get your oil changed there you can bet that they will try to tell you something is wrong with your car so they can scam you out of money.

As far as Cowboys bars, there are only really a couple. One on Peachtree Industrial and I forget where the other one is.

Atlanta is a great place to live if you're really big into college football, you have a wife that likes to shop and you're very religious. That's about it. I would suggest looking elsewhere. Moving to Atlanta was the worst decision I ever made and moving out of there when I had still had a lot of debt and didn't know anybody in Florida was the best decision I ever made and I wonder why I didn't do it sooner.

True about Florida. Central Florida like Orlando is extremely hot and humid but a place like Tampa I wonder if it isn't as hot because of the gulf? Yeah 10-15 hours driving is what I meant. Is BrAinPaiNt in West Virgina? I believe they get plenty of snow....

Orlando isn't all that bad and you get used to it after a while.

October - Dec is beautiful in Orlando. Jan - Mar you might get a combined 2 weeks of crappy weather. But, if it gets cold one day, you will see it recover to nice weather in a day or two. April and May are beautiful as well.

June and July do get hot, but the mornings and after 6 pm are nice. It will usually rain around 3pm, cool down and then get very humid before it turns beautiful around 6pm. Since you're working, you're not dealing with the heat and then when you get off of work you can do all sorts of outdoor activities.

August and September are awful though. No mistake about it, but I can deal with 2 months of awfully hot and humid weather for 10 months are really good weather, not having to shovel snow or deal with ice storms, etc.

That sucks lol but I appreciate the info! What area in Florida do you live in? I want to live near Tampa but it is a little too far from Ohio to drive back when we want to visit family. However I keep telling my wife we shouldn't base our move on that. My wife's brother lives in the Charlotte area and loves it. We're considering that area as well.

Atlanta > Florida, for me. I have lived in both. Of course, I had a job when I moved to ATL, so I didn't have to look for one. However, I found most everyone I met to be genuine and gracious. Most people I met were transplants.

I live in Cocoa Beach. I understand the desire to want to be close to your family, but it's a difference of 6 hours and loving where you are or being 6 hours closer and hating where you are...it shouldn't be a tough decision. A 10 hour drive still sucks, too.

Tampa is one of my favorite cities in this country. Easy access to the beaches, beautiful history combined with modern day urban resources. Also the % of college grads per capita is at the national average. Believe me, that will come in handy in the future because if you have to look for a new job, it's much easier to do so when you have less competition.

I have friends and family that live in Charlotte. 20 years ago I wasn't impressed with Charlotte, but over the past 10 years it has really turned around and I would highly recommend looking there, particularly over Atlanta.

Any particular reason why?

Mainly the weather. It isn't called Hotlanta for nothing, very humid and it rains a lot. I don't like the city itself, turning into a traffic nightmare. I live in LA and know traffic well but it is a different animal there.

Check out NC or Knoxville before ya make a decision.

Thanks! Yeah I hear you about family. 10 or 16 hours sucks any way you slice it lol. However when we drive to Orlando we have to drive through the Appalachian mountains and we hate it. With Atlanta we pretty much can bypass it all. Where is Cocoa Beach? Near Tampa or is it eastern Florida?
