Potential Cap Casualties

Instead of cutting any of these guys why not try to trade them?

After all, the Lions gave the Cowboys a 6th for Everson Griffen last season and Dallas used that pick on Quinton Bohanna.

If you were the GM of another team, would you give away even a 7th round pick for any of these players if you had the feeling the Cowboys might cut them anyway? They are all low level JAGs.

In fairness, it depends on who. We're not talking huge cost here so If it was someone on a rookie contract that you thought you would lose on waivers then it's possible. Especially if they showed a bit in practice games.

Really this thread is more about identifying who is it possible to walk away from and who isn't. It's hard to see us moving away from A.Brown, Basham, Urban, or Jarwin because of the guaranteed money so if it's close they make the team. Watkins, C.Wilson, N.Brown, or Nseike probably don't make the team if it's close.

I accept that. But I can see Brown getting cut if Simi Fehoko plays better and can play on special teams. Fehoko certainly has the size to play the roleBrown plays and if he can block I think Brown is gone. I think Wilson hangs around unless one of the UDFAs is something special. Nseike would have to get beat out by Josh Ball. I think that is unlikely. I think Ball has potential but needs a season to get up to speed. If we see Urban, Basham, and Watkins get cut it would be another offseason of incompetence. I think it is more likely Anae doesn't make the team, and maybe Armstrong gets cut.

My only point is none of the guys mentioned in the OP are good enough for another team to make a trade for them. If they don't make the team it will be because they aren't good enough.

This is really the first draft in a long time that was truly devoted to improving the defense. They are on a mission. Job isnt done. They need one more draft like this next year devoted to the defense and we have to hope they hit on some of these picks.

We still need a NT, FS, LB and possibly a 4-3 DE.
DE for sure
Gregory may or may not be the answer but he’s also
a FA after this season
I hope we don’t pick high enough to get the best but who knows
Either way I’d be looking at DE if there is a guy there next draft

I like all of those guys for depth....so to let them go in favor of money seems pointless...but I mean the receiver spot can be interesting....I Think Wilson and Brown both have spots on this team because they do offer some things more than just catching footballs and that' going to be important in keeping a spot on this team. All of those guys better be able to play special teams....

Yeah I tend to agree. I think the two trade candidates at this stage would be Hill and Robinson. They were formerly early ish picks that might be cleared out for the coaches guys. They'd still need to show something but if I was scouring to fill out the roster in those positions and they were a scheme fit then both are guys I'd consider throwing a 6th or 7th at.

I mean they've addressed all of those positions in the draft the past 2 years except free safety. So someone could come up and fill those holes...too early to tell.

It depends on how many receivers are they taking into the season? Is it 6? Also...if they have a shot at losing Gallup which many seem to think so....do you let a receiver go in favor of his roster spot this year?

I got it Gallup, Cooper, Lamb.....and then if they are fighting for 3 spots left...I'd think Cedric and Noah would be those spots and then Fehoko. Unless I'm missing someone? Or unless they plan on taking 5 receivers into the season which seems low.

Gregory won’t go anywhere. He knows he owes this franchise a lot.

I wouldn’t bet on loyalty
He also knows for the first time he actually can negotiate a contract
And if he has a good year he will have some leverage
But even if he comes back we must find DE help and next year could have a good one

addressed, but rotation guys. We’re going to need a true DE. Linebacker we may still need a 3rd with jaylon and love gone.

Meanwhile, six players, Lawrence, Cooper Dak, Elliott, Martin and Jaylon Smith are a combined 103 million dollar hit against the 2021 Cowboys salary cap.

Lawrence had six and a half sacks last season. If he were to repeat that number this season, then that would be $3,846,154 per sack. The Cowboys would be paying Cooper $217,391 per reception, and $13,994 for every yard that Zeke gained on the ground.

There are 32 teams in the NFL and three of the top fifteen salaries this season belong to a Cowboy. This is why the Cowboys can't sign talented veterans and must rely on rookies for many backup positions. I wouldn't be surprised if up to 13 or 14 drafted and undrafted rookies made the team this season..

This is the same mess that Jerry Jones got the Cowboys in the late 90's and the 2010's.

I mean I don’t know how you’d know what we need or don’t need without these playing anything. Maybe we will know more after this season.

Cowboys chose not to sign talented veterans. The Cowboys seem to be confident in these rookies since they’ve released some veterans.

Do we really have to go through this again? Its an opinion. If you don't like it, too bad.

You don’t think if someone offered him big money he wouldn't take it? The same guy who a year ago was working at Amazon? That’s wishful thinking and hoping

This is the same guy that was saying before the draft that we have a huge need at DE, Gregory isnt reliable, and we need to take Phillips with our first round pick at 10.
