Only posting players who played at least 30% of the snaps. Just a reminder, anything over 80 is a great game. 60-80 is a good game. Anything under 60 is not good.

Offense:
-
1. Tyler Smith 77.3
2. CD 68.5
3. Steele 67.9
4. Beebe - 67.8
5 Dowdle - 64.3

Other notables on offense:

Dak 58.0
Guyton. 42.0. ( got abused by Myles Garrett all day......but understandable)

Defense:

1. Overshown (!!). 88.6
2. Lewis 81.1
3. Diggs 76.3
4. Micah 75.8. ( they crushed him on the tackling score with a grade 30.4 in that area)
5. Kendricks 71.9

Notables:

Mazi 30.4 ( our lowest graded defender)
Kneeland 68
Damone - 77 ( but only 26 snaps)
The Guyton grade doesn’t surprise me but the fact that Myles Garrett did not blow up the Cowboys offense (like Micah did to Cle) speaks well of the team and it’s game plan to help Guyton. There’s no shame in that. M Garrett has made many All Pros look foolish.

As always when young rookies like Guyton, Kneeland, Beebe, Carson, and even Overshown - technically a second year player - play well, we automatically think Game one is a template for 16 more just like it. Young players will have some hiccups. That’s how they grow.

Yesterday was an exciting preview of what these guys can bring. But in the future it will also include some bad moments too.

He did miss out on 2-3 sacks that Watson escaped is possibly why
But those aren’t negative plays. Flushing him out and forcing an incompletion that others wouldn’t is a positive.

PFF grading is a measure of consistency over the entire game. It doesn't weight big plays like sacks or INTs. He got a good grade overall but his tackling wasn't good apparently.
I don’t need to grade every play to know he was often double teamed yet consistently got pressure across the game. He was a catalytic player on a dominate defense. The score just doesn’t pass the sniff test even with a few missed tackles. His assignment wasn’t stack and contain, it was get to the QB, he was living in Watson’s head.

Oh I’m not certain how they grade these. Was just suggesting a possibility

Well, it requires a membership to see the grades. So, you are welcome. You just have to understand they don't weight big plays so its a measure of snap-to-snap consistency as much as anything. Micah might have 2 sacks and get celebrated on here ad nauseum, but that doesn't gaurantee a good PFF grade if he doesn't show up for too many other snaps.
Like I said, people pick and choose when to say pff is trash.

We had 265 yards of offense. We punted 6 times. They actually beat us in time of possession somehow. The offense wasn't good. Zeke lead the running game with 40 yards and Dak passed for 179. Our defense won this game.
It's be more accurate to judge the offense based on the first half. They got conservative in the second and were more concerned with killing clock and protecting the ball.

At halftime, the Browns trailed by 17, had just one first down and were being outgained 216-54.

It's like yall ignore context completely.

I get that but what does a grade even mean? Is it like in scholastics where 100% implies perfection? If so then what is perfect?

The way they used to do it was they would start at zero and then add or subtract each play from there with values from -5 to 5. That is just opinion polling. Did they take that and convert it to 1 to 100?

It's great that they look at every play but so do a lot of people.

Dak 58.0

There has to be some kind of mistake. The league runner up to MVP last season and highest paid player in NFL history this season cannot have such a pedestrian performance.

Been saying this for years.

Michigan players are more fluff than substance.
There's a legitimate explanation for a lot of their busts come NFL time. When they had a cheat code for 3 years it leads to all sorts of things like wildly outperforming Vegas and inflated stats/better film for scouts. When you know it's a run before the snap (and even where the run is going), you can play much differently. When you know it's a zone blitz and you'll have a DE in coverage, you can play much differently. The team's record before/after the Connor Stalions hire is a dead giveaway. TCU being tipped off to the cheating, with a month to prepare, is another. Looking back I'm sure that a bunch of scouts would have changed their grades significantly if the truth was known.

PFF isn't THAT reliable. Its a decent guideline but that's all. I thought Guyton isn't getting his due. He had a few plays where he manhandled Garrett. For me, Guyton passed with flying colors, considering who he was facing all day. I also thought Mazi had a better game than his PFF score would indicate. I like how Zimmer was using him on the rotation. By years end I bet ya he will be making more plays and getting more reps. Id like to get Brooks and Tolbert more action. I do think Flournoy will shine and be hard to get off the field if he can ever get in a game. He reminds me of AJ Brown and Davante Adams combo.

Dowdle a 64? Dude SUCKED!

It's crap ratings like this which devalues what ratings PFF makes.

A 30 grade would tell me that Mazi was getting washed on the regular. He was not really washed at all even on doubles.

The opaqueness to their grades make them questionable but I see anecdotes like this all the time that make them worthless IMO.
From what I have seen, PFF's methodology works very well for pass rushers, even well enough to be predictive, (studs grade high, guys with low sack totals and high pass rush grades often mean-revert, young guys earning high grades break out), and it is just awful for NTs and safeties (their 2022 "All-PFF" safety Ryan Neal got straight up released by Seattle and signed a nothing-burger contract in Tampa).

I'm thinking it's because the assignment for pass rushers is so easy to define. You go beat the man in front of you and get to the QB. For an NT, his job may just be to eat two blocks and lose slowly enough for the LB to fill. A safety's assignment can be even more nebulous. For graders who are literally guessing at defensive assignments, that has a big influence.
