Dak 58.0

There has to be some kind of mistake. The league runner up to MVP last season and highest paid player in NFL history this season cannot have such a pedestrian performance.
Did you see the second half?

Normally I wouldn't put so much credence to these types of sites scoring NFL players, but in this case there is smoke to the criticizing fire. that wasn't a very good second half by Dak.

If we're just talking regular season Dak

PFF did not grade him well after the week 1 blow out against the NYG

Same for week 2 against the NYJ

And he went on to have a great regular season

So all in all, I wouldn't put too much stock in their score for Dak when the game wasn't competitive

I think his post was irony.

From what I have seen, PFF's methodology works very well for pass rushers, even well enough to be predictive, (studs grade high, guys with low sack totals and high pass rush grades often mean-revert, young guys earning high grades break out), and it is just awful for NTs and safeties (their 2022 "All-PFF" safety Ryan Neal got straight up released by Seattle and signed a nothing-burger contract in Tampa).

I'm thinking it's because the assignment for pass rushers is so easy to define. You go beat the man in front of you and get to the QB. For an NT, his job may just be to eat two blocks and lose slowly enough for the LB to fill. A safety's assignment can be even more nebulous. For graders who are literally guessing at defensive assignments, that has a big influence.
That makes sense. Similar to dynamics like pitcher/batter vs fielding metrics in baseball.

PFF conflates them all.

PFF isn't THAT reliable. Its a decent guideline but that's all. I thought Guyton isn't getting his due. He had a few plays where he manhandled Garrett. For me, Guyton passed with flying colors, considering who he was facing all day. I also thought Mazi had a better game than his PFF score would indicate. I like how Zimmer was using him on the rotation. By years end I bet ya he will be making more plays and getting more reps. Id like to get Brooks and Tolbert more action. I do think Flournoy will shine and be hard to get off the field if he can ever get in a game. He reminds me of AJ Brown and Davante Adams combo.
I'm curious about the criteria used to judge a player like Mazi. If PFF is grading him based on how many plays he made, that's not the correct criteria. Mazi has to be graded on how well he does holding his ground and occupying blockers, thus allowing the linebackers to make play. I may go back and do a film study on him later this week.

I don't put a ton of faith into PFF but this does confirm what I thought I saw.

Overshown was fantastic, all over the field. I thought Lewis had one of his better games as a Cowboy and I am usually pretty critical of him. Kneeland had 6 or 7 pressures and if you get that from him, given our depth issues at DE, that'd be great. Mazi was a non-factor. He's getting close to bust factor at this point. Diggs clearly played well. Beebe also looked good.

I figured Guyton would get a low score but he showed enough that I think with a few more games under his belt, he'll be fine.

Guyton's grade is pretty accurate. He lost rep after rep, and it hindered the offense all day. People can whistle past the graveyard all week, but the offense was bad except for 2 drives and only had a handful of 1st downs in the last 2 and half quarters. The Cowboys won't get away with an offensive showing like yesterday very often.

Mazi was bad yet again, 98 & 93 walk in the door and are instantly better.

13 was all over the field. Even when he didn't make the play, his speed chasing the play down jumps off the screen.

Martin's grade was not good, and it shouldn't have been. He got his tail kicked a # of times by 94.

Yeah it is interesting he became an All Pro starting off so slow. Makes you wonder what his ceiling was if he started off faster but I mean those games were similar to yesterday. Beat downs.

Only posting players who played at least 30% of the snaps. Just a reminder, anything over 80 is a great game. 60-80 is a good game. Anything under 60 is not good.

Offense:
-
1. Tyler Smith 77.3
2. CD 68.5
3. Steele 67.9
4. Beebe - 67.8
5 Dowdle - 64.3

Other notables on offense:

Dak 58.0
Guyton. 42.0. ( got abused by Myles Garrett all day......but understandable)

Defense:

1. Overshown (!!). 88.6
2. Lewis 81.1
3. Diggs 76.3
4. Micah 75.8. ( they crushed him on the tackling score with a grade 30.4 in that area)
5. Kendricks 71.9

Notables:

Mazi 30.4 ( our lowest graded defender)
Kneeland 68
Damone - 77 ( but only 26 snaps)
Overshown looked like he shot out of a cannon when he made the 4th down stop.

yeah the offense was not bad because of Guyton, they were fine in the first half.In the 2nd our run game was poor,Daks accuracy was poor and it felt they are happy to punt the ball.

Looks like a typical first game of season in NFL these days. LOL. Rusty, but will take the win.
