thats what i see too. can't spend big on a free agent safety right now. time to develope one

agreed.

I would prefer to spend the money on the OL and DL right now. We should be able to get a good safety in this year's class. This is widely regarded as a solid Safety class.

I'd much rather go after Kenny Phillips- he will be cheaper and a better fit in Monte's scheme.

I don't think he's the answer. I like his game, but he can't stay on the field. We've got enough of that already with the middle of our defense.

shouldnt the cowboys front office (and i use that term loosely) have known these issues/limitations already along with the needs of the team and planned accordingly?

if there are poor contracts or tons of money on the books, who gave out said contracts?

so, if the team has needs but does not have the required cap room, does that fall on the players? the fans? the front office?

inquiring minds want to know

BTW i am certainly not recommending signing a big name FA at safety

but it would be nice to be able to sign someone on the OL

Totally agree!

B-b-but... Stephen says he can do anything he wants to under the cap. Ultimately it doesn't exit...

Of course it falls on those in charge. Who doesn't know that and who is saying it doesn't? I was merely stating what I believe to be a fact in response to all these "lets sign this guy" threads.

When the Cowboys cut Sensabaugh, they had their sights set on Dashon Goldson, Safety of the 49ers. If the 49ers are dumb enough to let this stud walk (so far it looks like they will) then Jerry will be waiting with a checkbook in hand to sign this guy.

I think this will be our only major free agency pick-up and it will require the Cowboys working out a long term deal with either Romo or Spencer in order to free up enough cap space to make it happen.

What do you guys think?

I think the Cowboys will try to sign a Safety in Free Agency but probably not Goldson. It might be somebody like Kenny Phillips.

The defense desperately needs turnovers. A ball hawking safety would make a huge difference and probably a couple of wins.

Goldson is strictly a SS. Not that he wouldn't be an immediate upgrade over Church and Johnson, but we would still have a whole at FS if we signed him. If we had cap space I would be all for it, but given our situation we are kinda stuck with what we have at SS.

I think you may be thinking of Whitner? Goldson seems to fit the FS role for a tampa 2 pretty well. He's a decent cover guy and has good size to be a solid blitzer. The only FA target that would be a better fit just got tagged (Jarius Byrd).

Goldson is a great player and wouldn't be mad if Jerry could make the numbers work but I'm with the majority and would rather draft a Safety and hope that he actually pans out.

Maybe if we didn't tag spencer...but with a safety class this deep, and being so tight to the cap, no chance.

Bingo. It won't happen
