With the future QB play shady at best, and the emergence of returners such as Hester, Cribbs, Pac, ect. I believe a punt out of bounds will be a 15 yard penalty from here it went out. Very few punters even utilize the corner punt anymore anyway.

Why take a fun part out of the game?

I predict... it'll never happen.

Why is a punt dead when the ball stops rolling, but not a kickoff? Not the case in the CFL. The coffin corner kick can be an exciting part of the game also that shouldn't go away.

Both teams can recover a kick off and not a punt.

This will not be a penalty until McBriar starts punting out of bounds to the advantage of the Cowboys.

Decades ago punters were taught how to do coffin corner punts and put it out of bounds inside the 10. This seems to be a lost art. I wonder why so little effort is put into teaching punters how to aim the ball out of bounds?
That totally destroys any return possibility.

Many decades ago the hashmarks were wider across. If the ball was placed on a hash mark it would change the angle for the punter to reach the coffin corner. The narrow hash marks can be a disadvantage. They changed the hash mark locations in the 70s, so it as been a while.

One reason I heard about limiting the directional punting is that if a punter shanks one when he is aiming out of bounds around the 10 yard line then it is really going to be a poor punt. Opposed to if he is hitting it straight down the field or only slight off, then a shank won't be as bad.

There also is the "good old days" syndrome. Stats for punts downed inside the 20 have been compiled since 1976. The leaders for those are punters that have played in the 90s and currently.

They better not ever ban punts out of bounds. You talk about taking fun out of the returners game.

Well hell, lets remove CBs from being allowed to play, and during a run play - all def. linemen should just step aside and we can send out our kicker to tackle him.

You just essentially said the same thing (a non-recoverable ball = a "dead" ball), that's not the reason behind it. I would guess the real reason is because punt coverage is always closer than kickoff coverage, due to hang times and the distance of the kicks.

Think about it, if punt coverage teams could recover punts, it would turn the whole game into a circus. You'd simply have punters trying to pooch punt into open spots so his team could recover.

And that, my friends, is just plain silliness.

A punt is not a free kick therefore the ball is not a live ball free for anyone to possess. Punts may not be performed to start a game or half or after a TD or FG.

Fair catch is a safety issue punters would just lob the ball up and send their biggest hitter down the field to knock the ball loose, but can definitely can see the penalty for out of bounds on a punt

I was joking those where XFL rules.
