I'm still pretty undecided on Matt Waletzko. We still haven't seen much of him after we drafted him last year before he had surgery. I know many are looking forward to seeing how he plays on the field. Anyone have any insight or predictions on Waletzko for 2023?

Will just have to wait and see. From reports from OTA’s, the team is still high on what he may be able to do.

He should get a lot of playing time in the PS games. But the same goes for all the back up OL.
Love his size. I heard they were playing him at guard some. But I don't see the point in playing him at guard. The more reasonable thing would be for him to be able to swing right or left.

Waletzko spent his rookie season on IR. Waletzko will need a minimum of at least another year to develop. Just as it was unreasonable a year ago to expect Josh Ball to step in at Tackle and be successful after spending his rookie season on IR, it is completely unreasonable to expect success in 2023 from Waletzko. It is more reasonable to expect Josh Ball to be successful at Tackle in 2023 than it is to have high expectations for Waletzo in 2023.

Fortunately for the Cowboys, they have both Tyler Smith and Chuma Edoga on the team, both of whom have played offensive tackle in the NFL, to back-up Tyron Smith and Terence Steele. If the Cowboys get to Ball or Waletzko or one of the rookies, then they are having injury issues which could derail the season.

One of the rookies, or Ball, or Waletzko will emerge in 2024 as the Swing Tackle, as this is likely Tyron Smith's final season. But fans need to be patient. We have no idea which of the 4 players who could potentially play swing tackle will emerge as the winner of the competition. Time will tell.

It would be a miracle if he had a big impact on our line this year. He was a 4th or 5th round pick and washed out his rookie season with an injury? This is basically his rookie offseason. Coming out he had good feet, but was too weak up top. Did he work out and gain strength enough?

I find it hard to believe that a 4th round rookie is going to come in here on the Oline and hold his own without growing pains. He will get tested this year no doubt.

Biadasz, Connor Williams, Connor Mcgovern all got pushed around their rookie years.

I completely agree on Walennzko. Chuma is a scrub backup. More experience than those other guys but a downgrade from Connor McGovern that just left and was our weak link.

I really don't have much to say about the Great Waletzko other than many here are just wishfully thinking he will become the next Terrence Steele. Haven't seen that yet since TC and real practice and PS games need to happen. But you can say that about Ball, Edoga, and even Farniok. Who knows what they bring. I actually have more hope that a couple of the rookie OL the Cowboys got this offseason show promise----Simmons, Bass, Bostick. They need to hit on several of these backups or it's gonna be a long season. As for Wally, it is imperative he stay injury free this time.

It's called potential. Some aren't perfect or great or good when they first make it into NFL and it will take some development. Steele is a great example. He and Bostic are similar. Have some talent. Some gaps in their game and it may take a couple of years of development.

Will they? We just have to wait and see.

Game day active numbers.

The more he can contribute to as many roles and spots in the OL, the more it increases his chances of being being active on gameday.

It's not a given that he is going to be that active guy right now ... he could be a battle for backup jobs with rookie Richards and even vet Chuma
Both who have a chance of being used at both OT and OG themselves.
.
Matt has to prove he can out-compete them to be game day active.

he may answer the question "Who is the Swing Tackle" if:

1. Steele isn't available early, or
2. Tyron ever becomes unavailable

apparently he has impressive strength, shoulder issues hopefully behind him.

With Hunter Luepke predicted to be the next Moose Johnston and Sam Williams predicted to be the next Harvey Martin. Matt Waletzko will no doubt be the next Mark Tuinei. Optimism is high in Cowboys Nation, well at least until we lose our first game. Then it's all doom and gloom  would love it if we're all talking about how great a pick was in the near future. Hoping for the best :flagwave:

I'm giving a two year window from which to earn a viable roster spot of importance. I like his aggressive nature and size...which will grow.

Time on the carpet...

I have heard an unusual amount of smoke about him for a 5th rounder, so that's a positive.

It comes down to strength with him. I was always a fan of the hyper-mobile dancing bear type tackles, but the guys who succeed seem to be the strong guys who can anchor. Chris Simms pointed that out, and I can't un-see it now. Even the athletic tackles who make it tend to struggle for a couple years before they get NFL strong.

I'd like to see what Waletzko can do on the field.. you can tell pretty quickly if late rounders have it or they don't. If he has at least a flash of potential, then it's just a matter of squats and oats IMO.

Impossible for any fan to have any realistic prediction on him.

I'm optimistic, but it's really just based on RAS and what's come out about him in camp. There's certainly no tape to say what he is/isn't capable of.
