Preseason Game 2 reactions (and overreactions)

Look at his first carries compared to the second and third quarter....he looked completely different and much better as the game went on...he was hitting the holes and wasn't being blown over by the win.

Mafah got one carry and took it for 15 yds and a TD with crappy blocking on the way the play was called. He didn't need additional carries to be good. LOL.

Interesting that Mafah only got three plays on offense. I know he had a chest injury last week....so you would think he would either sit or get a decent amount of plays. All the reports in camp had him getting most of the second team work.
You're really just seeing what you want to see. Negligeable difference between the first and 2nd half runs.

1st half
J.Blue up the middle to DAL 35 for 10 yards
J.Blue up the middle to DAL 32 for -3 yards
J.Blue right tackle to DAL 25 for 3 yards
J.Blue right tackle to DAL 29 for 4 yards
J.Blue up the middle to DAL 41 for 6 yards
J.Blue right tackle to DAL 46 for 5 yards
J.Blue up the middle to ARZ 39 for 15 yards

2nd half
J.Blue right tackle to DAL 40 for 8 yards
J.Blue left guard to DAL 46 for 6 yards
J.Blue up the middle to ARZ 37 for 6 yards
J.Blue up the middle to ARZ 13 for 2 yards
J.Blue up the middle to ARZ 11 for 6 yards

Claiming Mafah didn't need additional carries at the very end of the game VS players who will be bagging groceries in a couple week all while blasting Blue for getting his numbers "at the end of the game" which he didn't and didn't even play at the end of the game, is just confirmation bias at its finest.

Why did you skip the first two runs of the first quarter? Hiding something?

Did I really "blast" Blue? Look at his first quarter runs? He literally goes down with no fight. He got better as the game went on as I acknowledged.

I think they have a pretty good handle on what Mafah is, that is why he didn't play more outside of returning kicks. They still aren't sure of Blue. He is a bit of a tease and I think they are giving him every chance to prove he is better than Mafah....and Izzy.

Mafah got one carry....and probably had the best individual run of the night. He was only in for 3 snaps.

It looks like they got two 1st round picks in the 3rd round. Barham and Revel.

Revel the only starter we saw tonight?

Wait, Bland and Durant must be the 2CB starters?
Not necessarily. Because of his injury coming out of college, he didn't have a preseason last year. I think the team wants him to get the reps; whereas both Bland and Durant are veteran CBs and they are comfortable with what they can already bring. Of the three, I believe Revel may have more upside.

They don’t look like chickens with their heads cutoff running around like the last two decades. That is promising in preseason :oldcouple:
I was thinking the very same thing. I didn’t see players on defense looking all around as the ball was getting snapped like “what are we doing?!? Who’s got who?!?” like in years past.

The contrast was noticeable.

I just became a fan of #55 Barham...I will be following him closely. We havent had that type of aggressive LB play in a long time.

A litlle dissapointed in #42 who we got from Niners. He looks like the part but soesnt seem to make plays. I’ll keep watching him too.
Did Winters even play? I thought he was rested with the other starters, including Overshown.

The starting IlBs were Barham and James.

Unless they snuck Winters in later in the game it explain why he didn’t make any plays :)

I don't think he's bad by any means, but I don't think he's special.

Also, that fumbling problem he has drags down an average running back into below average.
He’s no Barry Sanders, but he’s got something. He’s fast and he’s got some burst, too. He’s a heady player. I’d rather have him than Mafah all day.

Dude gets open, there is no denying the talent. And he got rocked by 31 and popped right back up.

If he doesn’t make the 53, I’m gonna be mad. He’s been awesome.
He’s gonna make it and I imagine we actually keep Mingo also. Six WR is a max load but I doubt either would clear waivers as there are a bunch of WR needy teams right now either due to lack of depth or injury.

No no high hopes why was your expectations be there from a 5th round pick seriously you are setting unrealistic expectations i'm longword fan I love this kid in college but I knew when he got to the pros that he would have a niche at first although in spot duty he can run through the mill this is not Deuce Vaughn..

This is not a gadget player but he's also not a 3 down back he's not a power back he can run all the place we just don't want to utilize them that way I prefer to use his speed and utilize his upside to our advantage and not put too much on him but you all are done and I love the kid he's a Longhorn hook him but I've never had those expectations he's not a disappointment because he can't be he's 5th round pick..
Yeah I get it. Just one of those fan hopeful things.

He had a skillset that has an upside. Maybe it doesn’t happen.

If they cut him, let’s say I’d be surprised, but not shocked.

Thing is someone can’t poach him and stick them on their PS, they have to keep him on the 53, so after thinking on it more he just might get through.

There are a lot of fast running backs on practice squads in the NFL though.

I also don't see what other people see in Mafah either. He's not bad but again, nothing special.

As always, I'm rooting for all of the players on the roster to improve and I hope they do show something before final cutdown to justify keeping any of them.

My personal 53 man roster projection through 2 preseason games:

QB (2): Dak Prescott, Joe Milton
RB (4): Javonte Williams, Hunter Luepke, Malik Davis, Jaydon Blue
WR (6): CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens, Ryan Flournoy, KaVontae Turpin, Jonathan Mingo, Camden Brown
TE (4): Jake Ferguson, Brevyn Spann-Ford, Luke Schoonmaker, Michael Trigg
OL (9): Tyler Guyton, Tyler Smith, Cooper Beebe, Tyler Booker, Terence Steele, T.J. Bass, Drew Shelton, Ajani Cornelius, Nate Thomas

DT (6): Quinnen Williams, Kenny Clark, Otito Ogbonnia, LT Overton, Jonathan Bullard, Jay Toia
OLB/DE (5): Donovan Ezeiruaku, Rashan Gary, Von Miller, Malachi Lawrence, Isaiah Land
ILB (4): DeMarvion Overshown, Dee Winters, Jaishawn Barham, Shamar James
CB (5): DaRon Bland, Shavon Revel, Cobie Durant, Devin Moore, Reddy Steward
S (5): Caleb Downs, Jalen Thompson, Malik Hooker, P.J. Locke, Julius Wood

ST (3): Brandon Aubrey, Bryan Anger, Trent Sieg
Good list!

Three spots I’d touch on.

James Houston is a lock. I don’t think he’s played in the preseason due to that fact. land can’t take his spot, so if you want Land, someone else has to go.

In your 53 man, it looks like you have bumped Carson for Steward. If you had asked me in April that would have surprised me but Carson played poorly last week, was involved in the big fight and had another tussle with Anthony Smith. He played clean last night but Reddy has had a really solid camp.

I’m on board with Reddy but I worry that the team might not come off of Carson who they drafted in the fifth and before this year showed a ton of promise.

Tight End: with Schoonmaker playing well, keeping Trigg seems like a luxury. You only have nine offensive linemen and are keeping six wide receiver. I think Trigg goes and maybe Trevor Keegan sticks. Trigg is a pet cat but I worry he doesn’t have a spot with nine pass catchers ahead of him. If you count Luepke, who actually played some H-Back tight end substitutions, that’s ten. I’m afraid they’ll opt for oline depth.

That's a solid projection.
I noticed you have Toia making the 53. I was impressed by the big fella last night.
I hope he sticks.

Yes I kind of forgot Houston in my quest to find room for Land. I picked Steward based off camp reports of him doing well.

Also sorry mods, I copy and pasted my post and put it in the roster zone where it belongs.

What about the fourth ILB? Overshown, Winters and Barham are locks.

Do you think Barron could bump James? He’s had a pretty good camp and it wouldn’t surprise me.

I suspect he gets a lot of carries next week. All of the backs look solid.
The Cowboys have stated they really like their RB room. And at this point I think Davis, Blue, and Abanikanda all bring something to the table. I like Mafah but just don't see the same burst from him as the other three backup candidates.

As I stated earlier I think they keep Javonte Williams, Luepke, Davis, and Blue. Izzy can go on the PS, if he gets claimed off waivers I doubt Mafah does so bring him back instead.
