He did the Dallas @ Philly game last season. We were called for 5 penalties

Not sure if that is good or bad.
I guess depends the penalties as well when / where they occur and what downs.

Do you know how many called on the Eagles?

This narrative is nonsense. If there is a penalty the official should call it. If they are ignoring penalties then they are deciding games in the same way except in this case they are doing it by ignoring a rule rather than following the rule.

With the game slanted towards the offense, I don't understand how the league can look at things and say "yeah, we probably need to flag every possible instance of contact during a route".

I understand offense is exciting, but at some point you have to let them play. Penalties are not exciting at all. The only rule that has challenged offenses is the "catch" rule because they can't come up with a consistent definition of the word.

At the same time, there are teams that get away with mugging the offense. I don't imagine it will get worse for Dallas than it was last Thanksgiving. If other teams are held to the same standard, I can get on board with that.

My concern is consistency........don't let one call decide a game when a same/similar type of penalty isn't called by a different crew.

When there are so many judgement call penalties, there almost has to be inconsistency. So that's how you get these conspiracy theories started by people who just ignore natural occurrence.

More speculative penalties! We’ll lose a game or two because of it. Bet we’ll lead the league in “roughing the passer” penalties that enable opponent scoring.

I always remember those Green Bay games. 2 plays in particular, I distinctly remember Packer OL holding our pass rushers (freaking choke holds!), and NOTHING called!

That is it, in a nutshell

a lot of penalties still require judgement calls to be made by referees. As a result. There is inconsistency and even the possibility of subconscious bias.

That’s why I much prefer a “let them play” approach. As opposed to the NFL deciding to put more emphasis on something like illegal contact.

Just another example of how IDIOTIC the entire NFL is. They are SO STUPID that they do not understand that fans hate to see a flag filled game.
So called fine tuning a game is beyond MORONIC.
There really are not the words to describe the imbeciles that run this clown show.
They make Jerry look competent.

By the way, I’m not saying it’s an anti-Cowboys conspiracy by saying it’s biased. Absent actual rule changes, officiating should be consistent from year to year, much less game to game. A flag happy crew that emphasizes a specific infraction affects teams disproportionately based on a team’s style of play.

I don’t expect perfection from the officials, they’re human after all. But a policy of emphasizing a particular penalty only serves to artificially increase the number of human errors.

I also agree that the officials are not perfect, but I read the points of emphasis slightly different. I read them basically the results of a performance evaluation and getting told "while evaluating calls we noticed that a lot of missed calls fell under illegal contact. Please be more careful not to miss these in the future". By saying that they are now looking for it which means it is more likely to be called because as anyone knows when the boss says "x is not happening correctly" you are going to make extra sure that x happens correctly above everything else.

I agree in a perfect world that officiating should be consistent from year to year but if a mistake is happening the correct response is not to go "whelp lets just let the mistake keep happening" but is instead to fix it. If the rule is incorrect, or too broad, then the rule should be fixed, but the officials should simply be calling when the rule is violated and leaving what "should" be the rule to competition committee.

Has anyone seen the Tim Donaghy documentary on Netflix. I didn’t really buy into the whole conspiracy thing when it comes to officiating a game, but that doc changed my mind.

Now it didn’t change it in that I believe in officiating conspiracies, but officials are humans and humans can have agendas and feelings. Tim mentioned some of the most respected NBA officials would have it out for whoever because of whatever reason. He know officials that would take it easy on calls or make calls more frequently because of those reasons.

Oh and the Jordan rules, he most definitely confirmed that they didn’t make certain calls on him.

I know I’m referring to an ex-NBA official, but the point is, humans are humans.
