I want opinions from the board. I hear his first step is the best in the draft. Imagine if he wasn’t 261. At 250 he might run 4.3.

Right. If all they wanted was speed, there were faster guys at defensive end. Sam Williams is a lot like Tyler Smith. Both players are more than likely year two players who'll show flashes in year one. If anything, I would like to see Sam Williams get bigger.

I wouldn’t. He comes in the league the same weight as d law.

I can't at all see how a 40 time in shorts means much as a pass rusher, but ok.

That said, it wouldn't surprise me if this kid doesn't dress half the time, nor would it surprise me if Quinn has him and Parsons as the talk of the league early on.

Its reasonable to expect it to fall somewhere in between.

Do you folks generally get a boom or bust vibe from him? Put the off the field stuff aside for a minute.

I'm not sure I see him ending up in Anthony Spencer ville (good not great).

I see him as either Taco or something very special.

They did reach for him according to many player rankings, but it was probably worth the shot.

Who were the “faster guys at defensive end”?

Exactly ONE edge player, Amare Barno (6'5 246 4.36).

Barno posted the fastest 40 for an EDGE/LB in combine history.

Even faster than Micah Parsons.

But Barno is a project.

Williams 4.46 40 was simply ridiculous, especially at his size and with his production.

If Williams did not have the off field issues he goes before Travon Walker imo.

And his bench press was significantly more.

Not just faster than Ware coming out but more powerful than Tank.

What Williams lacks is hand fighting and overall technique. Cowboys should hire Ware to train and mentor him YESTERDAY.

He put up 12.5 sacks on pure speed and power.

George Selvie.

Breathe that one in. It stings the nostrils.
Selvie had stiff hips, which made him a rotational type DE at best. Results could be the same if they can't light a fire under him and teach him some on techniques, but the upside is much more. His apparent lack of instincts bothers me more than anything.

You can have Barno. I'll take Parsons, hater.

I think a decent comp is Terrell Suggs early vintage. Sw is 6-4, 261 lbs. Suggs is/was 6-3 260. I think they have similar traits as well.

Suggs won every LB/DL award in 2002 after setting all time NCAA sack record - 24 sacks.

He was similar sized to Williams - 6'3 262 but he ran a 4.84 40 and benched 225 only 19 times (vs 26 for Williams).

Suggs was a technique demon.

Nope. Barno is a toothpick. Late rounder at best. He'll get pushed around.

Amare Barno - 6'5 246 4.36

Derrick Thomas - 6'3 234 4.58
Jason Taylor - 6'5 243 4.67
Von Miller - 6'3 246 4.42
Randy Gregory - 6'5 235 4.64
DeMarcus Ware - 6'4 251 4.53

And I'd play Barno at OLB simply because he is still too raw as EDGE.

12.5 sacks in 13 games while playing an SEC schedule (and lining up against at least 2 1st round picks). Pretty impressive.

I’m not worried about comps. I care about production. Too many players have the right measurables but don’t have the game stats to back it up. Williams has shown he has pass rusher ability & can even get better with the right coaching.
