Jaylon Smith's first game shows progress, ways to go

Jaylon Smith is to be congratulated. No matter what happens, the Dallas Cowboyslinebacker has overcome incredible odds to play in a NFL game.

The odds are stacked against a player when he essentially dislocates his knee and injures the peroneal nerve. Most players (such as Marcus Lattimore) who dislocate a knee never return to play football, even when the nerve is spared.

Smith is second on the Cowboys’ depth chart, behind Sean Lee, and got the chance to start in Saturday night’s preseason game. He played three series with the first team as Lee was resting a hamstring injury.

This is just preseason, so let’s not get too excited or too critical. Smith hasn’t played in a game in almost 600 days. This was his first NFL action. His accomplishments should be celebrated. He performed admirably and garnered one nice tackle.

The shame is without this injury, he probably would be the generational linebacker that some were projecting. Even with his suiting up to play, the prognosis regarding Smith has not changed from what was expressed here earlier this year.

If you watch the plays he was involved in Saturday closely, there appear to be clear indications of what he cannot yet do.

The one tackle he made in three series Saturday was a powerful play where he closed in linear fashion to the right flat. That will be his strength. Start-stop acceleration and direction change will be the challenge.

Note that he does not play special teams like most back up linebackers. It would be extremely hard to run full speed and adjust his angle of attack.

His comeback is remarkable. We should all be rooting for him and look at Saturday as a good start and glass half-full, even with visible deficiencies.

This guy is gonna keep moving the goalposts until he writes an article titled: "No Super Bowl MVP for Jaylon indicates a clear difference between players with and without drop foot"

This is exactly the gist I got. It's like the intro to a medical thesis.

I really like how smith looked but he did seem to have problems on a couple of plays of planting his foot down and changing direction when he took a bad angle. I still think that smith will be good nickel linebacker for us but in our base defense hitchens needs to be the middle linebacker.

I find myself overanazlying smiths' every movement. At times I feel he looks good. Then I see some limp? I mean my untrained eye is seeing what it wants to see.

I will say this. He did very good considering he's been out for 600 days & with only maybe 80-85% nerve regeneration.

I do though believe he will only get better with time. And 2018 will be the year we see his full potential.

We are barely halfway through camp. With 2 more games to go who knows what will happen. I think it was more rust and not have played so much and he didn't want to over correct and just came up short on some tackles. With more play time the better he will trust his knee....foot etc

Something does look slightly off about him when he moves.

Like he's not as fluid as he should be.

I just don't know if it will effect how he plays

I think that smiths straight line speed will be great as a pass rushing linebacker in our nickel defense. I just think that will be his best role for us this year and when his foot totally heals he can be a three down linebacker in the future.

It could just be jitters. It could be that he is going against his first NFL team ever. It could be that this is his first game action in over 500 days.

It could be his foot.

This isn't directed at you but I believe he will have people doubting him no matter what...because so many people were adamant that he would never even get this far.

Anybody who hasn't played in 600 days will have a ways to go.

The one play where he filled the wrong hole, it did look like he didn't cut to the right as quickly as maybe he should have. But was that due to his injury? Or was it due to rust and inexperience?

You can't expect the performance of a starter from what is essentially a red shirted rookie.

He just needs to play more.

Why anyone listens to that guy I will never understand. He was dead set on Smith never playing football. He is a proven hack doctor whose never even examined Smith. I'll trust doctor Cooper over that dude any day and twice on Sunday.

sure it is..now, I don't know if him being careful or that all he's got. He has straight forward speed but I saw him miss twice because he don't trust the plant and cut. He just reached out and hoped for the best. missed twice.

I think it is more mental than anything. It essentially was planting, after being pushed of course, that caused the injury in the first place when his foot got stuck in the ground. So I can see him being cautious about planting and with change of direction.
