Battery life for any laptop is going to vary by what you are doing while it's on battery. The only way you will ever get the full charge is by leaving it on and doing nothing.

As far as brands I couldn't tell you. I have never purchased a low end laptop. All the ones I buy are business class Dells.

I got this last year for $600 something at circuit city (now out of business). Been pretty good, actually suprised how good. I capture and edit HD video, run 3d Apps, photoshop etc.

Games, not so great. If you want to play games....dont get this. Everything else, it works great.

So some budget comps are pretty decent, but some are really bad. Read reviews and read some more before you buy.

For Price/Quality, I would go with something like a thinkpad. I have several that I use for work and home and have not had an issue. As far as battery life the two things that are going to use the most juice are the LCD and the hard drive. So to extended battery life you want to get a laptop with a slower hard drive, but in turn you lose some performance with the hard drive already being the slowest component of your computer.

The ThinkPad SL400is on sale right now for less than $500.

Thinkpads are going to be more for getting work done on the move, rather than a mobile entertainment center.

Personally I have never been impressed by a thinkpad. I don't like them at all.

They are dull as hell, that is for sure. But in my experience the quality has always been there.

I have had an Acer 5610Z for over 2 years now and it is running just dandy. Bought it at Wally world. :)
