Projected #1 Overall Pick Cam Ward Calls Out Cowboys' Defense

I can’t imagine any upcoming rookie saying that about the eagles, chiefs, ravens defenses…and others. We don’t even get respect from rookies.

And remember…respect is earned…right now until proven otherwise on the field, the Cowboys haven’t earned much respect.

That’s why comments like this don’t bother me. First of all it’s the truth. Second of all, the only way to shut those kind of comments up is on the scoreboard…in the playoffs!!!
If we start stopping the run, our defense could be great.

Is he? I am not so sure about that. To me he looks like he is trying to imitate Patrick Mahomes half the time. I am not anointing anyone until they play a year or two in the NFL. I am honestly not crazy about any of the QB in this years draft. Most QB , even those taken in the first round, never live up to the hype coming out of college.
I mean... shouldn't all QBs try to imitate Mahomes?

Great way to fire up a D no matter who they are. Somebody on the Cowboys D is going to make him regret that comment. He may win the game but he would be advised to wear some extra padding in Cowboy games.

Hmmm… the previous seasons under Quinn we played almost exclusively single high. The passing defense was ranked 5th , under 200 yards a game in 2023.
Last year we had and unusual amount of attrition to the Dline and a numerous injuries to corners forcing more 2 deep that our safety’s aren’t used to playing nor equipped (Wilson).
This has more to do with an agent giving a QB a crash course on zone, using our banged up defense to make him look more knowledgeable of zone defenses than what he really is.
This is all about boosting draft stock of someone who’s has questions reading zone and has nothing to do with respect!

If it is true that an agent has to give a Ward a crash course on zone, not only does Ward not deserve to go #1, he doesn’t deserve to get drafted at all.

Pretty much every QB coming out of college needs a crash course in NFL zone coverages. Its whole point is to confuse them. There’s a reason many take off scrambling due to imaginary pressure and why so many high draft picks at the position fail at this level.
Ideally Ward would be a 3rd round pick and have 2 or 3 years sitting on the bench to learn how to read NFL defenses. Due to a shortage of possible players capable of playing at this level teams are forced to take QBs way too high. It’s the agents job to make taking that player more palatable!

Oh yeah?

Well, it just so happens, Cam, that most teams don't get that opportunity to hit those sideline seams against the Cowboys...

......because they are too busy running the ball down their throat.

So there!

lol right Cam if you looked at the Dallas defense and thought "I'll pass the ball" you failed the test already...

It is one thing to see that coverage from the relative safety of a film room it is another to see on the field when guys are running at you. Yes Cover 2 is Vanilla but has its place as do most other coverage schemes.

Stroud and Daniels would like a word.

Every NFL quarterback prospect has a strong understanding of zone coverages and are galaxies beyond their agents knowledge unless the agent was a top QB in a previous life. I’m not suggesting there is not much to learn but most top high school prospects are beyond needing a crash course in zone defense.

Regarding confusing the QB, the confusion is not because they don’t understand standard coverages. The confusion comes from disguising coverages, alignments, fronts, etc. The look of confusion also often comes from differences in processing time as the game typically speeds up when moving to the pro’s. Hopefully the game eventually slows down with experience but again, the issue isn’t that they don’t understand basic coverages. And it’s true that NFL defenses will test him in those areas.

As far as most draft picks failing, it’s usually because they are not talented enough. There are only so many QB positions available, so odds are most are going to fail. The same holds true for most positions.

i think Disguising has alot do to with how they prepare for the week and of course talent around them...most QB's who get into the NFL can read a base defense fine...coaching matters.

Stroud has had the luxury of playing with a deep receiving corps and a good run game backed by a good defense. When playing competition that was strong enough vs the run that they could play cover 2 zone he’s folded!
Daniels was still the same one read QB that I watched here in Louisiana. He moves around well enough in the pocket and finds a receiver in the scramble drill to get away with it this year in part because teams were playing him conservatively because of lack of NFL film. Just the fact that he took 56 sacks on a 12-5 team would indicate he’s not reading defenses very well. Let’s see if he can improve once DCs have had an entire offseason to break down his weaknesses and that his development wasn’t as stagnant as Strouds before we anoint him eh!
