Projection: Julius Wood will be on the 53

We are seeing reports from the fan in Dfw about the Camp he's having. I went and watched some of his reps. The kid is killin it guys. I know it's early, no exhibition games been played yet, but who else here thinks we need to keep a close eye on him? Could he press the cowboys to make a tough decision? If he can translate his camp reps to the games, we might have found a starter. That's right, I think he could start instead of Hooker. I also think this scheme will use a lot of 3 safety looks. He, the guy we got from Arizona, and Downs might be the combo we see. Hooker hasn't been very good. Thoughts on Wood?
From the clips I've been seeing...I got him over Bell. Bell sure seems to be the guy everyone is picking on...He can't cover.

If he's good on special teams, they might keep him over Markquese Bell.

Looks like Caleb Downs is basically a slot defender now so the safeties can be Thompson, Hooker, Locke, Wood, and maybe Alijah Clark.

m

been saying this.

Hooker IMO could be the odd man out. Downs, Thompson are going to start. You have Locke as well.

Woods could make the 53. Bell should be gone.

It’s all about Hookers contract. If his $$ is all guaranteed he is staying.
Maybe we trade a safety for a lower end draft pick?

Re-doing someone’s deal doesn’t mean a team keeps him. Say “Hi” to Mr. Myles Garrett.
Completely different situation lol.

1) how many teams not in rebuild mode are dumping veteran starters?
2) hooker won’t have much trade value past a very late round pick. Garrett was a potential franchise altering move allowing Cleveland to
3) Garrett got an extension, Hooker was a true renegotiation.

I agree that hookers $3.5m isn’t so much money that he can’t be moved, but it’s going to take an awful lot for the cowboys to eat that money and have someone else take his spot.

Let me get my final opinion on this I really don't care who they keep I don't care who they cut, I'm going to trust the new coaching staff it's not going to be playing any kind of favorites anybody that's considered low hanging fruit leftovers the fat There is no BMOC on this team the the last three seasons if you look at the decline of this defense there shouldn't be anybody left in the end that was on Dan Quinn's defense or Zimmer's defense and I know it's harder to purge everyone that soon but I don't think any favoritism's gonna be played they will cut everyone who doesn't fit or doesn't perform in training camp or preseason.

Talking about penciled in starters here we're talking about the rest of these guys fighting for the depth chart at safety or linebacker I just don't think anyone's safe outside of that there are some obviously but II believe that this is an open competition and I don't think Jerry or anybody has any favorites on this team that they would make them keep As far as the guys were talking about not talking about the pencil then starters that are quite obvious are gonna be here,

If you look at the last two offseason the way they've been operating and even in the mid season with the trades and even willing to get rid of a contract that they just gave like to OSA and trade a guy I think they're operating differently there is nobody safe on this team Unless they're clear starters...

And those guys better watch out too because they're gonna lose at least their starting spot and their depth chart because I believe that is what needs to be done here you can't just be hanging around on the team because you were here before and you are veteran and you have a bigger contract Nope..

I have no dog in this fight. I just supply the facts. For a safety the agility and quickness are close to CB numbers. The speed is a LB.
20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.43
3-Cone Drill: 6.78

Since Everson Walls and Mike Downs, I have not had a training camp pet. But I was right about those big dogs. They could hunt.
My response wasnt directed towards you. Just the fact that Woods doesnt have NFL speed.

Gary and Lawrence both ran 4.5 range. As well as Overshown. Barahm is probably the slowest at 4.64.

Woods ran a 4.74. 1.70 10 yard split. Id about guarantee there isnt a DB on any team that slow to make a team.

You are making the correct statement. I did not take it personally. The 10 yard split did not equate to a 4.4 short shuttle which is more of a quickness measurable in football than the 40 yard dash.

However, your OP stated he was not quick. He is football quick but just not fast. I agree with you and stated he has LB speed. A slow LB speed.

If teams thought Wood could cover he wouldn't be where he is today.
Fair point but he was an undrafted free agent that started out as a project. He almost made the 53 here but was cut and claimed off waivers by the Titans. Then in Tennessee he got suspended (I forget what for) and only played a handful of games. They cut him and the Cowboys got him back.

Players like him need time and after a couple years in the league he could finally be "getting it".

If wood goes into the PS, someone will poach him. That cannot happen.
This did happen before, and this guy didn't light the world on fire elsewhere. And he is back, so if he is so great - why does no other team want him then? But the minute he's put on the PS all the other teams will come running for him? Doesn't make sense.

He got suspended for PEDs and with Tennessee only played on special teams. Maybe it all has clicked for him and this is his big breakthrough, but if he couldn't crack even a rotational role on the juice I'm not optimistic hes NFL caliber off it. Plus after his suspension Tennessee brought him back to camp the following year and cut him.

Seems like hes a pretty good athlete for his size and a high effort player....those guys can often shine in camp, especially early on. Realistically hes a very end of roster player who's opportunity to make it will be more about his ability to impact special teams than anything else, which is where his profile suggests he could really be impactful.

Nah. 10 yard splits show plenty of quickness.

40s show functional speed.

Deep speed isnt even measured. And fast 40s dont necessarily translate to deep speed.

Shuttles and 3 cones are just as much about practicing them as they are about running them. One slip and your time is blown.

I once ran a 6.53 three cone. 4.59 forty. 36 inch vertical. At 195lbs. And Id consider myself waaay out of the ability the guys in the NFL have.

I have zero faith someone less athletic than me will ever play in the NFL.
