Promote Garrett to GM?

Obviously Garrett is in over his head as a HC. He has a poor feel for the game and clearly he has not improved over his tenure. However, he has had some success in selecting the right players that given the right scheme and coaching would likely succeed. He is supposedly intelligent but obviously his methodic thought process does not lend itself to pressure, in the moment, in-game decisions. Promoting him to GM would absolve Jerry of declaring his pet project a total failure and would perhaps put Garrett where he really belongs, behind a desk.

People think that there is an innate eye for talent that determines whether players succeed or fail. I actually believe a lot of this is coaching.

When Bill Parcells left for the Dolphins it's not like he tore it up as GM. The reason Parcells was successful was he created a culture that motivated players and led to player development. He couldn't do that from the GM chair and thus he largely failed as a GM.

I think Garrett has had some similar successes with Bryant, Lee, Smith and Murray. Bryant could have been a disaster but matured pretty well. People compared Lee to Carpenter early on. Tyron Smith has certainly shown development ect.

But on the other hand Garrett also has to share the blame for this defense. He is head coach of the whole team and not just the offense and all signs point to the fact he was intricately involved in the decision making. I really do not trust his expertise on the defensive side of the ball.

For what this team needs right now, which is largely defense, I think a GM Garrett is a terrible fit.

Yeah, that's the ticket. Let's promote someone that's a failure in their current position. He can't manage a football team, so let him manage an entire organization. I would not react well if that happened.

I don't buy this myth that Garrett has all this control over player personnel. All you had to do was watch the live cam in the war room during the draft to see who was calling the shots. Besides, drafting hasn't been THAT good under Garrett. It's not like he wasn't here in 2009.

Seriously though that is a terrible idea. There is no reason to protect the current owner because of his GM failings.
No reason to promote a coach that has been mediocre either.

If Garrett was GM we would have never drafted Dez who is easily our best talent on the entire team.
