Promotion and relegation idea

Let's be honest, the Carolina Panthers hardly resemble anything that an NFL team should look like. In most sports leagues in other parts of the world like Europe or even in the American Football league in Japan (X-League), they'd be prime candidates for relegation so far. But, how would such a relegation and promotion system work? Well, here is an idea that I have thought of.

I am aware the NFL likes to have a few football leagues in the summer. I think this is where the CFL and a lot of the indoor leagues come in. As for the UFL, which has produced legitimate talent, I think their season should be moved to during the season. Their regular season games should be played on Tuesday evenings, Wednesday evenings, and Friday evenings. This keeps them out of the way of NFL games and allows for daily football games between the NFL, UFL, and college football. Their championship could be the Sunday between the conference championships and the Super Bowl (and move the Pro bowl back to after the SB). To add to the UFL Championship stakes, the winner of the UFL Bowl would earn promotion to the NFL. The worst team in the NFL would be relegated to the UFL.

Then, for the draft, the NFL would have their draft first. Then, about a week or two later, THE UFL would have their draft. The champion of the UFL who got promoted to the NFL would have the number 1 pick, while the relegated team has the last pick in the UFL pick. This, to add excitement, it would be possible for a team to be newly promoted, like say the Birmingham Stallions who would be an exciting addition to the NFC South, to be newly promoted and win the Super Bowl.

This would probably hurt a team like the Panthers, but they hurt our eyes from having to watch them suck routinely. The NFL is supposed to have the best quality football teams. So, why not relegate the worst team yearly to the UFL like they do in other parts of the world?
 
First, the NFLPA would never agree to it as any player on a relegated team would want out of their contract immediately to join other non-relegated NFL teams.

In addition, no good free agent players would sign with relegated teams which would make it nearly impossible for those teams to rejoin the NFL in the future.

If the NFL was worried about persistently bad teams, they would simply remove them, not try to push them into another league.

The NFL is built on the idea that teams can improve through the draft and free agency, but they need to be in the NFL to benefit from those.
 
This would be the first idea the NFL and NFLPA would be 100% against. Rare PA and NFL unity lol.

At times there will be really bad teams. Lions, Cleveland, Miami, etc teams that barely win a game. No owner would want to own a franchise that could be relegated to a lower league. That would hurt valuation.


The NFL is the best of the best, mainly cause it's the only league really, but talent between the top players and lower players are still huge. Just that will 11 players on the field, you can mask the bad one at times.

Carolina tried to rebuild, and it has failed to date. They will be bad for a while it seems. But, in some time, they will be better than what they are now, and possibly a new team will take their place as worst in the league.

Promotion and relegation will not happen in any American sports. It needs to happen in MLS but no chance you will see it in the NFL, NBA, NHL, and MLB.
 
The worst NFL team would be favored by 50 points over the best UFL, the talent gap is extremely massive. Any UFL team that gets put into the NFL goes 0-17 and is right back in the UFL the following year. The other issue you may run into is a lack of participation in the UFL. These guys are typically playing in the spring for a chance to earn an invite to an NFL training camp, if you delay that to where they would have to wait a year to even get an opportunity a lot of players may pass.

A for effort and creativity, but this would only make the bottom tier of teams even worse.

Almost none of these points are true. I still don’t think the overall idea is a good one but your points just aren’t true. How do you think teams that are relegated in other sports get back up? Because it’s possible

It's possible because they started doing it long ago and its a core part of their sport.

There is absolutely no way the NFLPA would agree to this because even if the NFL still guaranteed the salaries of players would remain at NFL levels (which they would have to be subsidized by all NFL teams to do so) players on relegated teams would make less money through endorsements and have a much harder time getting a new large contract once their current contracts run out because they would have been playing in a lesser league.

In addition, free agents would not want to sign with any team at risk of relegation which would make it more likely that those teams would be relegated.

Lastly, the NFL draft would not include relegated teams so while the NFL teams get better each year through the draft, the relegated NFL teams would be stuck with undrafted rookie free agents that were not only not good enough to be drafted but also not good enough to be signed to the practice squad of all of the non-relegated NFL teams.

Whether you agree with it or not, every point I made was absolutely true with today's NFL and NFLPA.

I get it. Keep in mind I wouldn’t mind seeing it. Same argument is there for the White Sox in baseball. No team should be rewarded for losing over 120 games in a game 162 game season.

So instead of the worst team getting the top pick and the draft, which is usually the opportunity at a player who could make a major impact and turn the team around, they get kicked to a lower league AND get the leftovers from everyone else the other teams didn't pick? That would basically give them one season to "escape" the UFL and get back to the NFL so they could actually attempt to improve.

It's a fun thought exercise, but as others have pointed out there is no way this ever happens.

I think implementing a promotion and relegation system would be better here in the Zone.
 
I would be more in favor of partnership with the UFL, and then have a rights draft for players in the UFL, so NFL teams have control of their rights for 2 years and then they go back into the NFL draft pool after two years.
 
Salary (hard) cap + draft system + rookie contract scale absolutely negates the relegation/promotion mechanics. These are two universes that just can't mesh
