This probably won't matter much since most of you are Playstation haters, but here goes anyway.

The new PS3 Slim has come out and is priced at $299. Dell is offering a $45 discount coupon and free shipping. ($254) It's out of stock, but you can still buy it. After tax, it comes out about $270. So, it saves you about $50 off buying it in a store.

Dell link to the PS3 Slim.

Add it to the cart, then put in this coupon number: 6FWJ247J1P44CK

They also have the regular PS3 with the Uncharted bundle (reg. $399) for $339 with free shipping. Coupon Code: 6FWJ247J1P44CK

********. I have an rss feed of it on my primary home page. Never used it before, but since I was in the market for a PS3, it worked out.

What is the difference between the slim and the bundle? I haven't done much research on the PS3 or X-Box since my kids are so young (which plants us firmly in the Wii demographic), but that new Batman game coming out and the new Star Wars that is on the horizon is making me ponder an "adult system" purchase.

The Uncharted bundle comes with a 160gb Hard Drive, the game Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (which is excellent), and is the old-style PS3. Big, heavy, substantial. The Slim is a redesign of the PS3: much smaller, lighter, lower profile. Comes with a 120gb Hard Drive. No games packed in. Slim uses far less power and will take up far less space on your desk/entertainment center.

The new one isn't THAT much smaller, it's still pretty substantial in terms of footprint (about the size of a 360), just "slimmer".

It's 1/3 smaller and uses 1/3 less energy and gives off less heat. It also has a matte finish rather than the glossy fingerprint magnet the original PS3 had. It (like some of the original PS3) is not backwards complatable. (ie doesn't play PS2 games) Only specific model of the older ones played PS2 games.

Oh yeah, it also has actual buttons this time rather than the touch sensor type buttons the original had.

Can I start another "opportunity of a lifetime" thread to get the Zone to buy me one? I return, I will post pics of all the fun I'm having so you can all feel good about the purchase!

Its a lot smaller if you stand it up vertically like a lot of us do, though. 2/3s the size is a significant reduction.

It's smaller in terms of mass, but I'm talking about the footprint. It's still going to take up pretty much the same amount of shelf space.

If you stand it up, then that's probably a different story.

In comparison the the 360 the size comparison is:

PS3 Slim: 290 × 65 × 290 mm 3.2 kg

360: 310 x 80 x 260 mm 3.5 kg

So like I said, it's still a fair bit similar to the 360 in terms of footprint, but it is slimmer while the 360 has less depth.

The power savings is nice, I think the overall machine is just more efficient. The first gen PS3 was just huge, it looks like a kitchen appliance so they had a lot to work with in terms of shrinking it.

The bigger deal to me is the price drop.

We traded in our KitchenAid Mixer for it since it's fully capable of making our mash potatos and cake mixing. :laugh2:

I agree with you about the price drop. Thats why I though the extra $45 discount and free shipping made it an absolute steal. Enough that I bought one even though it's on backorder.

NYC, Count (everyone else that would know)

Why are there so many people that like the X-Box over the PS3? As an outside purchaser, the Blue Ray function of the PS3 seems pretty appealing, but I'm not 100% sure of what the X-Box offers that makes people like it so much. Just curious.

If you have young kids the Xbox seems more popular. The PS3 tends to appeal more to the older hard core gamers.

Of course, you always have to take into account the issues that Xbox360 has. (over 50% failure rate) But like I said, if you have younger gamers, they will like the Xbox better due to the games are more suited.

XBox Live, and a larger library of games. Also, the Xbox was up until this point significantly cheaper than the PS3.

Hmm it was on ********.com

LINK

It appears Dell has now removed the PS3 slim. I can't get to the page anymore. The Uncharted still appears to be there. (damn glad I got mine!, or at least I hope I got it.)

My email says I have an estimated delivery date of 9/18/2009. I guess is really is backordered. It's ok though, I'm in no rush for it and my son doesn't know that it's coming yet. Otherwise it would be terrible! :laugh2:

I have both. I can say that I've bought two 360's and they've both failed (red ring of death), so for me their failure rate isn't 50% but 100%.

That being said, I enjoy the game selection and X-Box Live is a much better online gaming setup than what the PS3 has to offer. I also have a Netflix subscription and X-Box Live is the only system that natively supports streaming movies directly from the system. Also the 360 seems to support more codecs for streaming movies from my computer as well.

My PS3, until recently, was reserved solely for Blu-Ray movies, since I have a home theater as well and friends enjoy coming over since I have a system and a nice TV. Being that it's seen so little use, I can't really comment on its long term reliability, but so far so good. My only real problem for gaming is that I have large hands and the Playstation controller that fit so well when I was a younger feels cramped now.
