You can have a player sit, but I don't think you can suspend them without pay. His contract is guaranteed at the beginning of the season.

Not what was said last night, ESPN said Philly could suspend him without pay for behavior detrimental to the team same thing Tampa did with Keyshawn.

First of all Key still got paid even though told him they didn't want him.

I seriously doubt the NFLPA would allow players to be in a situation where a team could make them sit the bench and not pay them. Effectively blackballing them. Won't happen. If that was the case then players woudl be getting peanuts. SIgn a guy to a contract and tell him you get his or you get nothing. If they keep him on the roster they got to pay him.

Now here is an interesting scenario. What if TO and Rosenhouse have already lined up a team that wants him and is willing to pay him what he wants. They are doing this show to get philly to want to trade him or cut him.....

According to the report, no Key was not being paid when a player is suspended they are not getting paid.

Yes he was paid.

Also an interesting point: Johnson had a 8 year 56 million dollar contractwith Tampa. I think I see why TO wants a new contract. Clearly TO is better than Johnson. Kind of puts things in perspective a little.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers shelved their disgruntled star receiver, Keyshawn Johnson, for the rest of the year Tuesday, saying he had become disruptive during a disappointing 4-6 start for the defending Super Bowl champions.

The Bucs said they would deactivate Johnson for the remaining six games. He will be paid his full salary and was not fined, general manager Rich McKay said.

Just saying what was reported last night. Players union even backed up the statement that a player who is suspended is done so without pay, the team though must show a reason for a player being suspended. When a player is suspended for substance abuse for example he is not paid, what would be the use of suspending a player if he was going to get a check irregardless if he played or not. Hell you go get high and still get a check.

I think "deactivated" is a somewhat different proposition from "suspended"... but as I remember it, Keyshawn was indeed still drawing a paycheck after they sent him home...

I understand that they can suspend him for substance abuse and the like, however conduct detrimental to the team is very broad and I don't think they wikll be allowed to suspend without pay for something like that. If they are able to then there is probally a very short time limit on it.

Hell the skins took a 9 mil hit to get rid of coles I don't see why the eagles wouldnt' do the same to TO.

Evidently that must be the differance. However in the case of TO they did say 1 option the eagles had was to suspend him which they said would mean they would not pay him.

Evidently they must show prof of this to the NFLPA however in the case of TO he has is helping prove the case for the eagles. He is hurt yet running routs and catching the ball on a away from the team? I though he was injured? Then getting into it with Reid and Childress.

Report from John Clayton:
In retrospect, Terrell Owens should have followed through on his threat to hold out of training camp. By showing up and having a verbal fight with coach Andy Reid that caused him to leave the Philadelphia Eagles camp Wednesday, Owens did a disservice to himself and the Eagles.
The Eagles knew Owens could be trouble. They put clauses in his $49 million to protect themselves for situations like Wednesday. According to his contract, Owens could be forced to pay back $1.725 million of his $2.3 million signing bonus if he's involved in any incident that is considered conduct detrimental to the team.
Clearly, a verbal fight with his head coach is conduct detrimental. Supposedly, Owens was suspended for refusing to attend a mandatory autograph session, and for practicing away from the rest of the team. That was violation of his contract because it clearly states he has to do some mandatory signings.

I would also bet that if they take money back from his signing bonus they have to release him also.

I'm sure that would give TO another option but don't you think any other team out there will want to put similar clauses in TO contract to protect themselves? After all TO is playing for his 2nd team and has had problems now at both places. After a while you have to look at the fact that it is not the teams that are creating the problem but TO himself.

I'd love it... wonder how long it would take him to fire Rosenhaus??

I don't know not sure how smart TO is and not sure that TO would get a better deal anywhere else at this stage. Any team that would sign TO at this point will do so with some protection after all TO has been with 2 teams and has been a pain in the ars at both places, you could even add a 3rd given some of the remarks by TO at the Ravens
