You point to Leon Washington's punt return against the Steelers. It set the Jets up to make a game winning field goal. What would have happened if he would have returned it for a TD? No one can say but if I was a Jets fan, I'd much rather have my kicker attempting an almost chip shot to win the game than have the Steelers offense on the field with time left and a chance to tie.
This week the Dolphins had a punt return for a TD. The Dolphins lost. Heck, the week before that, Cribbs returned a kick for the Browns against the Steelers. The Browns lost.
I'm not saying that I wouldn't want a return TD. What I am saying is that return TDs in and of themselves are not an indicator of success.
I agree a return for a bad team is not going to make them better. It will keep them in the game and give them a chance. Good special teams on a good team gives them a big edge.
