The only reason to put guys on PUP rather than hoping to get them playing sooner is if there are guys who would take those spots for the first third of the season and you actually think they will win you some games you'd otherwise lose.....because even with this move, once the players return from their PUP hiatus, you still have to cut the roster down and expose players to other teams.

Pretty sure you have to have the guy on the 53 to put him on short term IR. Sorta defeats the purpose if you are trying to stash a player

Yes, a player can't be put on the Designated for Return IR until after the initial cuts. He would have to be on the 53 for the initial cuts. They could then bring back a player that cleared waivers, but they couldn't prevent that player from being exposed to waivers.

You'd be wrong.

And if that's what he meant, it would be even worse.

Dlaw would be out the entire season..

Hes expected back well before the midway point.. It would be a horrendous decision

New IR rules allow a player to come back by week 6 (DLaw) and Spencer qualifies for PUP and could also come back by week 6. If Cowboys need another spot to better analyze/stash a player like Vaughn then OP has a workable solution. Unless Spencer or DLaw are ready to go much earlier than week 6.

IR to return: They can practice after 6 weeks but they can't be activated for a game until 8 weeks.

Well if you want to put the guy on IR designated to return, say so

It doesn't just automatically apply

You can only use it once

And it would still be dumb to use on dlaw

There is a Designated for Return IR option. If Lawrence was put on DFR-IR he could return after 8 weeks.

That's right, allowed to practice week 6, then activated to play week 8.

I'm still surrpised at the people who still don't understand how the PUP list works. It's been corrected many, many, many times. Demarcus Lawrence isn't eligible to be put on the PUP list. Once you practice, you can't be put on it.

That and Spencer sounds like he *should* be back by week 1. And didn't we have people here last year acting like Alex Tanney would be a franchise QB and we were stupid to put him on the P-S?

Vaughn could work out, but it's going to be a long shot and it will take years for him to do so. Odds are he just has some good preseason games and that is it for his entire career.

Trying to catch lightning in a bottle twice is not a sound roster management strategy.

Especially since Romo isn't going anywhere and Weeden looks like a capable backup

Vaughn is nothing to get to worked up about. Try to stash, if not oh well. But we will need those roster spots early in the season.

Agree, the thinking is it would take Brent weeks if not months to get into NFL DLine condition to take the hitting, and yet Spencer with MicroFrac surgery and out of contact for almost as long, save a stretch last year can be ready in 3-5 weeks......don't buy it. It all depends if they see a youngster or a Cut addition that can help a lot quicker. One of the 2 will be IR'd with the return to play option

Every year our incompetent front office deludes itself into thinking that street FAs and average to below average injured players will be difference makers and makes bad decisions based on those unsound judgements

Why should this year be any different ?

Damn, you're right -- brain freeze there. But the thought still applies to Spencer.

Brilliant idea! Except for the fact that Lawrence isn't eligible for PUP. Otherwise genius.

Yeah, my bad. Completely forgot that Lawrence actually played in TC. I guess I was thinking he only participated in mini camps. I do understand how the PUP works now though. :)
